Scheuerell Scores for Evergreen in 2-1 Loss at George Fox

NEWBERG, Ore. -- The Evergreen State College scored the first goal of the game, but George Fox University tallied the final two goals, as the Bruins defeated the Geoducks 2-1 on Saturday, Aug. 23 at Austin Sports Complex. Evergreen was playing its season opener and fell to 0-1. It was an exhibition game for George Fox.

Sage Scheuerell (Sr., F) gave the Geoducks a 1-0 lead at 18:01. He shot with his right foot, sending the ball around a defender and into the left side of the goal.

George Fox tied the score and later took the lead on a pair of goals by Wilson Fresh. The game-tying goal was scored at 28:45 and was assisted by Carson Tapia. Evergreen and GFU were still tied at halftime.

Fresh put the Bruins in front 2-1 when he scored again just 53 seconds into the second half. He was assisted by Kellin Aguiar.

Evergreen took four shots in the second half, but the Geoducks were unable to equalize. A shot by Jonas Olvera Calderon (Sr., D) with just under 10 minutes remaining was saved by GFU goalie Joshua Adams-Vakulenko.

The Bruins held a 27-6 edge in total shots during the game and owned a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. GFU claimed a 3-2 margin in corner kicks.

Evergreen goalkeeper Tom Cole (Jr.) registered five saves for the Geoducks. George Fox played three goalies, with Adams-Vakulenko earning the Bruins' only save. Patrick O'Brien was credited with the goalkeeper win.

The Geoducks will return to action with a game at the University of Puget Sound on Saturday, Aug. 30. Kickoff in Tacoma, Washington, is slated for 1 p.m. PDT.
