Formella Pounds Out 8 Kills in Loss to #4-Ranked Corban

SALEM, Ore. -- Zofia Formella (So., MB) registered eight kills for The Evergreen State College against #4-ranked Corban University in a Cascade Collegiate Conference match on Saturday, Sept. 13, but Corban won the match 3-0. The Warriors prevailed 25-14, 25-15, 25-10.

Corban advanced its record to 10-1 overall and to 4-0 in the CCC. The Warriors are ranked #4 in the NAIA. Evergreen moved to 0-8 on the season, 0-4 in the CCC. Seven of Evergreen's eight opponents were ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Women's Volleyball Poll at the time they played the Geoducks. Three of the last four opponents were ranked in the Top 10.

Formella's eight kills give her a team-leading 47 kills on the season. She has earned seven or more kills three times. Against Corban, Sophia Scroggins (Jr., OPP/MB) produced five kills for the Geoducks. Jaci Yamada (Fr., DS) supplied six digs, while Jayden Vaimaona (Jr., S) finished with nine assists. Ashley Walker Campbell (Sr., OPP) contributed three block assists.

The Corban attack was led by Kendra Bittle and Makayla Roginski, each with 11 kills. Roginksi also provided a .400 hitting percentage. Abby Guindy recorded 23 assists, and Nadeiah Howard added nine assists. Emma Bischoff made 10 digs for the Warriors.

Evergreen trailed 12-3 in the first set as Bittle and Roginski each earned their first three kills for Corban. The Geoducks tallied the next two points on a kill by Formella and an attacking error by the Warriors. Corban held a 16-7 advantage after 23 rallies and went on to win the set 25-14.

The Geoducks held a 3-2 lead following a combination block by Scroggins and Mikayla Kelly in the second set. The Warriors scored the next eight points to claim a 10-3 edge. A bit later, Evergreen reduced the margin to 14-9 with a 4-0 run by the Geoducks, including a kill by Bright Brubaker (So., OPP/S). The next five points went to Corban on its way to taking the set 25-15.

In the third set, Corban grabbed a 5-1 lead. Evergreen scored on a kill by Kelly and an attacking miscue by the Warriors to pull within 5-3. Corban extended its lead with a 6-0 run for an 11-3 advantage. The Geoducks added the next two points on a kill by Formella and a service ace from Sue Losey (Fr., S/RS). The Warriors answered with a 3-0 run and remained in front for the rest of the set.

Evergreen will play its first home match of the season on Friday, Sept. 19, when the Geoducks host Lewis-Clark State College. Match time for the CCC match-up is set for 6 p.m. PDT at the Costantino Recreation Center .
