ASHLAND, Ore. -- The Evergreen State College scored first on a goal by
Marvin Sea (Jr. F) and the teams were tied 1-1 at halftime, but Southern Oregon University added three goals in the second half to defeat the Geoducks 4-1 on Friday, Sept. 19. It was the Cascade Conference opener for both teams, as the Raiders improved to 6-0-1 overall, 0-1-0 in the CCC, while Evergreen dropped to 0-4-0, 0-1-0 in the CCC.
Evergreen took its 1-0 lead when Sea put a shot into the net at the 17:46 mark. He was assisted by
Kainoa Wong (Sr., F). The scoring play involved three shots.
Sage Scheuerell (Sr. F) shot from the left side and SOU goalkeeper Casey Ruvolo earned a save at the near post. Wong shot next and Ruvolo made another save just outside of the six-yard box. The ball deflected to the goalie's left, and went straight to Sea, who scored from eight yards out.
Sea has scored in consecutive games. He also contributed goal against Warner Pacific University during a non-conference game on Sunday, Sept. 14.
The Raiders, who received votes in this week's NAIA Men's Soccer Poll, tied the score on a successful penalty goal by Daniel Palomino a few minutes later at 20:16. The foul that led to the penalty kick followed a shot by SOU's Josue Ghiessy Biveghe that was blocked.
Evergreen and Southern Oregon remained tied until about seven minutes into the second half. Irwin Leon of SOU broke the tie with a goal at 51:58 and eventually completed a hat trick with goals at 53:17 and 63:13. His first goal was assisted by Papa Yansane. His second goal was scored on a header and was assisted by Yansane and Felix Valenzuela Paz. Leon's third goal followed assists from Jonathan Colunga and Biveghe.
The Geoducks put together a total of three shots between the 67th minute and the 68th minute but couldn't produce a goal. Southern Oregon finished with a 22-12 advantage in total shots and an 11-5 lead in shots on goal.
Tom Cole accumulated six saves in goal for the Geoducks. Ruvolo registered four saves for the Raiders.
Evergreen will play at Oregon Tech on Saturday, Sept. 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. PDT.
