OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College and Carroll College (Mont.) were tied 0-0 at halftime on Friday, Sept. 26, and the game remained scoreless until the 57th minutes, when the Fighting Saints earned a goal. Carroll added three goals in the next 16 minutes to defeat the Geoducks 4-0 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference game at Geoduck Pitch.
It seemed that either team could win -- or the game might end in a 0-0 tie -- until Carroll's scoring outburst. The Saints moved to 4-1-1 on the season, 2-0-0 in the CCC men's soccer standings. Evergreen dropped to 0-6-0 overall, including 0-3-0 in the CCC.
Both teams earned three shots in the first half. Carroll goalkeeper Juan Muniz Navarrete made one save during the opening 45 minutes. Evergreen was credited with a team save when a defender cleared the ball in the air after a header by Justus Hermann of Carroll at 25:26.
The scoreless tie passed the 50th minute and then went beyond the 55th minute. At 56:46, Alfie Snow broke the deadlock for Carroll by scoring on a shot from eight yards on the left side into the lower right corner of the net. Sam Loughton was credited with an assist on the play.
Each team took a shot that was saved before the Saints increased their lead.
Alejandro Gallegos (Sr. D) shot for the Geoducks at 64:49, with Navarrete achieving a save. Loughton registered a shot for Carroll at 65:44 that was saved by Evergreen goalie
Tom Cole (Jr.).
Carroll's second goal was tallied by Loughton at 67:09 with an assist from Enrico Paparelli. The goal was recorded on a 3-yard shot. Paparelli also assisted on the next goal, which went to Cyrille Wangama at 68:30 rom three yards out, giving the Saints a 3-0 lead.
Nils Benning completed the scoring for the Saints at 72:52 with a successful 8-yard shot. Walker Jump received an assist on the play.
The Saints gained an 11-6 edge in total shots during the game and held a 7-3 margin in shots on target. Carroll finished with a 6-3 lead in corner kicks. Each team committed 13 fouls. Cole provided Evergreen with two saves, while Navarrete contributed three saves for Carroll.
Up next for the Geoducks is a home game against Rocky Mountain College (Mont.) on Saturday, Sept. 27. Game time at Geoduck Pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
