Walla Walla Defeats Evergreen 69-55 in Women's Basketball

COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. -- Walla Walla University downed The Evergreen State College 69-55 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball game at Windemuth Court on Friday, Jan. 16. The Wolves held a 31-27 lead at halftime and remained in front throughout the second half.

Jaylo Bello led Walla Walla with 25 points and connected on 10 of 19 field goals and 5 of 7 free throws. She also recorded seven rebound, three assists, and three steals. Ally Haslam tacked on 20 points to go along with seven boards and three assists. Sidney Folkenberg provided the Wolves with a game-high 11 rebounds and six steals. Tessa Duncan finished with eight points and three assists.

Evergreen was paced by Jenna Glenzel (Sr., G), who scored 14 points and hit 6 of 12 field goals. Glenzel earned eight rebounds and three steals. She leads the CCC with 56 steals and 4.7 steals per game this season.

Bayleigh Harder (Sr., F/C) earned 13 points against Walla Walla and led the Geoducks with nine rebounds. She also registered three steals. Amaya Afatasi (Jr., PG) supplied Evergreen with 13 points, six rebounds and a game-high five assists. Haleigh Hanson (So., C) scored six points.

Walla Walla improved to 3-12 on the season and to 1-8 in the CCC. Evergreen fell to 0-12 overall, 0-9 in the CCC.

Evergreen led 6-3 after Hanson scored on a layup with 7:29 left in the first quarter and the Geoducks owned a 10-6 advantage on a layup by Glenzel at the 6:11 mark. Walla Walla used a 7-0 run, ending with a 3-pointer by Duncan, to grab a 13-10 lead. The Wolves owned an 18-14 edge as the end of the first quarter.

Both teams tallied 13 points in the second quarter. The Geoducks pulled within 22-20 midway through the quarter on a jumper by Harder but couldn't tie the score. Each team added two points before the Wolves earned additional points for a 27-22 advantage. Evergreen reduced the margin to just two points two more times, including 29-27 on a jumper by Shaunya Kahananui (Jr., F) with 43 seconds to play in the half. Bello added a layup for Walla Walla at the buzzer.

Hanson put through a jump shot for the Geoducks with 8:05 left in the third quarter to pulled Evergreen withing 31-29. Walla Walla responded with a 9-0 run, including a 3-pointer by Duncan and four points from Bello. The Wolves led 40-29 with 5:38 on the clock. Evergreen battled back within 42-37 on a free throw by Glenzel with 1:15 remaining in the quarter, but the Wolves finished the period with a layup by bello and two free throws from Duncan.

Walla Walla extended the margin to 53-39 with 6:35 left in the game following a traditional three-point play by Bello. Evergreen scored the next six points to move within 53-45 on a jumper by Habiba Adam (Fr., G) at the 4:46 mark. The Wolves recorded the next five points and led by nine or more points for the remainder of the game.

The Wolves shot 43.3% for the game (26 of 60) and made 6 of 22 three-pointers (27.3%). Walla Walla was 11 of 16 (68.8%) at the free throw line. Evergreen was 21 of 63 on field goals (33.3) and was 11 for 16 on free throws (68.6%). The Geoducks connected on just 2 of 24 three-point shots (8.3%). Evergreen achieved a 40-39 rebounding margin.

Evergreen will play at Lewis-Clark State College on Saturday, Jan. 17. Game time in Lewiston, Idaho, is scheduled for 4 p.m. PST.
