Cole Torres (Fr.) finished in second place in the 184-pound weight class and
Horacio Godinez (So.) took third place at 141 pounds for The Evergreen State College men's wrestling team, as the Geoducks hosted the Evergreen Open on Sunday, Jan. 18. The tournament, featuring 15 teams and unattached athletes, was held at the Costantino Recreation Center on the Evergreen campus.
Torres reached the championship match at 184 pounds. He opened the tournament with a bye before pinning unattached wrestler
Amgalan Bambalaev at 1:57 in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Torres edged out Will Abrahms from Southwestern Oregon Community College 11-10. Torres held an 11-4 lead entering the third period, before Abrahms added six quick points in the closing seconds.
In the semifinals, Torres defeated Matteo Monteiro Furtado Tresse from Umpqua Community College with a pin at 3:55. Unattached competitor Carlos Toledano won the championship match by pinning Torres during the second period at 3:53.
Godinez started the 141-pound weight class with a 17-0 technical fall against Joaquin Marcado, who competed unattached. In the quarterfinals, Godinez added another technical fall, this time in a 17-1 victory over Matix Cooklin from Eastern Oregon University. In the semifinal round, unattached wrestler Robby Vaughn pinned Godinez at 55 seconds.
During the consolation semifinals, Godinez rebounded by pinning unattached competitor Dominic Fuhrman in just 12 seconds. Godinez prevailed in the third place match with a 19-0 technical fall against Cooklin. Godinez was 4-1 during the tournament as he improved his season record to 26-3.
Hassan Abdi (Jr.) from Evergreen was 3-2 and advanced to the consolation semifinals in the 157-pound weight class. He began the day with a 16-12 victory against Nico Yazzolino of Clackamas Community College. In the quarterfinal round, Hudson Garcia from Washington State University downed Abdi, 8-1.
The loss to Garcia moved Abdi into the second round of the consolation bracket, where he defeated Christian Mardock from Pacific University (Ore.) with a 27-5 technical fall. In the consolation third round, Abdi pinned Marcelas Curtis of Pacific early in the third period at 5:27. Kellen Kolka from Umpqua CC defeated Abdi 10-2 on a major decision in the consolation semifinals.
At 149 pounds,
Jayms Vilona (Fr.) represented the Geoducks and reached the consolation semifinals. He received a bye in the first round of the tournament. In the second round, he won with a fall at 7:00 as the match ended against Joey Marshall from Central Washington University. Vilona won in the quarterfinals with a 21-4 technical fall versus unattached wrestler Cameron Kuehn.
In the championship semifinals, Vilona lost to unattached competitor
Alex Richardson by a slim 7-5 score. In the consolation semifinals, unattached wrestler
Boris Bambalaev downed Vilona 15-9.
Also in the 149-pound weight class,
Alex Fenwick (Fr.) form Evergreen received a bye before earning a pin at 2:04 in the second round versus Keagon Olson, who competed unattached. Fenwick lost in the quarterfinals and in the consolation fourth round.
Orion Rhinehart (So.) won for the Geoducks in the first round at 157 points with a pin 1:49 into his match against unattached competitor Caige Coleman. Kellen Kolka of Umpqua CC downed Rhinehart with an 18-2 technical fall in the quarterfinals. Rhinehart advanced out of the consolation second round with a win by medical forfeit against unattached wrestler George Stedman. In the consolation third round, Nico Yazzolino of Clackamas CC defeated Rhinehart with a 17-2 technical fall.
For Evergreen in the 285-pound bracket,
Anthony Wong-Pina (Jr.) won his first two matches with pins. He defeated Antonio Navarro of Washington State at 4:26 in the first round and then downed unattached wrestler Chris Whalen at 2:58 in the quarterfinals. Wong-Pina was defeated in the championship semifinals and in the consolation semifinals.
