EUGENE, Ore. --
Tony Frohlich-Fair (Sr., W) of The Evergreen State College tied a season high with 28 points against his former team on Friday, Feb. 2, but three players from Bushnell University each scored at least 23 points to lead the Beacons to a 104-80 victory over the Geoducks. Frohlich-Fair matched his scoring output of 28 points against Benedictine University Mesa (Arizona) on Nov. 13.
The Cascade Collegiate Conference win at the Morse Center improved the Beacons to 6-6 overall, 3-2 in the CCC. Evergreen fell to 0-7 on the season, 0-5 in the CCC.
Frohlich-Fair hit 8 of 13 field goals against the Beacons on Friday while going 12 for 15 at the free throw line. He led the Geoducks with seven rebounds and also contributed two assists and two steals. Frohlich-Fair transferred to Evergreen from Bushnell this past fall.
Two other Geoducks reached double figures in scoring in Friday's game. Zack Jefferson (Sr., G) produced 17 points and was 7 for 12 from the field, including 3 of 7 on 3-pointers.
Tyler No (Jr., G) tacked on 14 points, as he connected on 4 of 5 field goals -- all from 3-point range -- and hit 2 of 4 free throws. Jefferson was credited with one assist and one steal, while No grabbed two rebounds and earned one assist.
Bradley Graham (Sr., G) led Evergreen with seven assists. Grasham also provided three rebounds and three steals.
For Bushnell, Squeeky Johnson led the way with 26 points. He was 9 of 15 on field goals, as he made 6 of 11 shots from 3-point range. Johnson was 2 for 3 on free throws. He also recorded three rebounds. Kaleb Burnett registered 25 points for the Beacons, while hitting 11 of 17 field goal tries. He grabbed 10 rebounds to go with six assists. Cory Johnson supplied Bushnell with 23 points and was 10 for 19 on field goals. He led all players with 15 boards and was credited with six assists and two steals.
The Beacons opened the game with a 17-0 run. The run began with a 3-point basket by Squeeky Johnson, who later completed the run with a 3-pointer as the clock reached 16:02. The offensive surge included six points by Burnett and a 3-pointer by Roy Bunn. Meanwhile, Evergreen missed its first three field goal attempts and committed three turnovers early in the game.
Frohlich-Fair scored Evergreen's first points on a layup with 15:56 left in the first half. Squeeky Johnson tallied the next five points on a jump shot and a 3-pointer to give Bushnell a 22-2 advantage. Over the final 15 minutes of the half, the Geoducks performed well against the Beacons, limiting Bushnell to a slim 33-30 scoring edge. However, the big run at the start of the game helped the Beacons own a 55-32 lead at the intermission.
At halftime, Squeeky Johnson had 18 points for Bushnell and Frohlich-Fair had 13 points for Evergreen. Burnett added 12 points in the first half for Bushnell.
No scored two 3-pointers for the Geoducks in the first minute of the second half, while Burnett hit a 3-pointer for Bushnell, as Evergreen reduced the margin to 58-38. The Beacons answered with a 12-5 run, starting with a layup by Burnett and a 3-pointer by Squeeky Johnson. Bushnell owned a 70-43 lead with 15:39 to play.
Evergreen responded with a 16-3 run that reduced the deficit to 73-59 following a layup by
Jemoi Davis at the 10:59 mark. The run also included a layup by Frohlich-Fair, two 3-pointers from No, and one 3-pointer each by Jefferson and
Kohrey Bridges (Sr., F). The Geoducks eventually pulled within 82-70 with 7:16 remaining when Jefferson scored on a layup. Bushnell secured the win by outscoring Evergreen 22-10 the rest of the way.
Both teams shot well on field goals and 3-pointers. Evergreen converted 46.7% of its field goal attempts (28 of 60), while making 10 of 24 three-pointers (41.7%). The Geoducks shot 58.1% on field goals in the second half (18 of 31). The Beacons were 41 of 75 on field goals (54.7%), including 22 of 37 in the first half (59.5%). Bushnell was 13 for 38 on 3-point shots (46.4%).
The Geoducks will play another CCC road game on Saturday, Feb. 3 when they take on Corban University in Salem, Oregon. Game time is set for 5 p.m. PST.
