Hanson Scores 19 Points, Harder Adds 16, against Oregon Tech

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Haleigh Hanson (So., C) scored 19 points for The Evergreen State College and teammate Bayleigh Harder (Sr., F/C) tallied 16 points, but Oregon Tech defeated the Geoducks 90-61 at the Costantino Recreation Center on Saturday, Jan. 24. Jozie Ramos led the Owls with 25 points and 15 rebounds.

Oregon Tech advanced its record to 13-7 overall, 9-3 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Evergreen moved to 0-15 on the season, 0-12 in the CCC.

Hanson's 19 points set her season high as she connected on 9 of 16 field goals and went 1 for 2 at the free throw line. Harder's 16-points included a pair of 3-point baskets. Habiba Adam (Fr., G) and Jenna Glenzel (Sr., G) each chipped in 10 points. Glenzel led the Geoducks with six rebounds and tied Habiba for the team lead with three steals. Adam and Jesselle Victo Castillo (Jr., PG) each grabbed four rebounds. 

For OIT, Ramos reached her double-double by hitting 8 of 14 field goals and 9 of 9 free throws, while hauling down five offensive boards and 10 defensive rebounds. Tatum Schmerbach added 21 points, nine rebounds, and six assists for the Owls. Schmerbach made 10 of 14 shots from the field. Ayla Marston tacked on 12 points for OIT, while Olivia Sprague contributed 11 points, eight boards, seven assists, and three steals.

The Geoducks trailed 6-4 with 7:30 left in the first quarter after Adam sank a jump shot. Evergreen fell behind 13-6 but reduced the margin to 13-12 with 4:29 to play when Hanson made a jumper to complete a 6-0 run. OIT answered by closing out the quarter with a 12-4 offensive surge as the Owls took a 25-14 lead. Ramos scored the first four points and the last four points of the run.

Oregon Tech outscored Evergreen 16-12 during the second quarter. Evergreen managed to pull within 31-24 on a jumper by Hanson with 4:34 left in the half. The Owls earned the next 10 points, starting with a layup by Marston and two baskets by Schmerbach. Amaialyne Cepeda (Sr., G) of Evergreen stopped the run by scoring on a layup with 19 seconds left to cut the margin to 41-26 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Evergreen scored five of the first seven points to move as close as 43-31 with 9:20 on the clock. The run featured a 3-pointer by Harder and a layup by Adam. Sprague scored next on a 3-pointer to start a 9-0 outburst by OIT to increase the Owls' advantage to 52-31 at the 6:15 mark. Oregon Tech gained a 25-20 scoring edge during the third quarter and entered the final 10 minutes with a 66-46 lead. 

OIT shot 53.7% from the field by hitting 36 of 67 attempts. The Owls made 2 of 9 three-point tries and sank 16 of 19 free throws (84.2%). OIT gained a 45-24 rebounding margin.

The Geoducks connected on 41.3% of their field goals (26 of 63), while making 2 of 6 three-pointers. Evergreen was 7 for 9 at the free throw line (77.8%). Evergreen committed just 12 turnovers, while forcing Oregon Tech into 13 turnovers.

Evergreen will take on Corban University at the CRC on Friday, Jan. 30. Tip-off in the CCC matchup is set for 5:30 p.m. PST.
