OLYMPIA, Wash. --
Bayleigh Harder (Sr., F/C) scored 16 points and
Jenna Glenzel (Sr., G) added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for The Evergreen State College, but #22-ranked Corban University defeated the Geoducks 102-58 at the Costantino Recreation Center on Friday, Jan. 30. Jersey Huerta of Corban led all players with 31 points for the Warriors.
Corban, ranked #22 in the NAIA Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, improved to 17-4 on the season, 10-3 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Evergreen dropped to 0-16 overall, 0-13 in the CCC.
In addition to scoring 16 points, Harder blocked five shots and grabbed four rebounds for the Geoducks. Glenzel finished with a strong all-around game, complimenting the 13 points and 10 boards with five steals and three assists. Harder and Glenzel each went 5 for 5 at the free throw line.
Sahara Soufi (Jr., G) registered 10 points for Evergreen.
Haleigh Hanson (So., C) contributed six points.
Amaialyne Cepeda (Sr., G) hauled down four rebounds.
Huerta connected on 12 of 20 field goals, made four 3-pointers, and went 3 for 3 on free throws on her way to 31 points for Corban. She also provided the Warriors with eight rebounds, six steals, and four assists. Izzy McCauley tacked on 17 points and hit 5 of 7 three-points hosts. Jenna Albrecht accumulated 11 points, three assists, and three steals. Tayla Yost and Sevennah Van De Riet were each credited with six rebounds.
The Geoducks took a 4-2 lead on a layup by Glenzel with 7:41 left in the first quarter. Huerta answered with a 3-pointer by Huerta, but soon Evergreen moved in front 6-5 on a jumper by Soufi. Later in the quarter, a layup from Harder gave Evergreen an 11-9 edge with 4:29 on the clock. The Warriors scored seven unanswered points before Harder hit a jumper with 0:42 remaining, as the Geoducks pulled within 18-13 after 10 minutes.
Corban outscored Evergreen 36-9 in the second quarter to take control. Mandie Jensen sank a 3-pointer for the Warriors to begin a 12-0 surge to open the period. Evergreen scored next on a free throw by
Habiba Adam (Fr., G) at the 6:43 mark to stop the run at 30-14. The Warriors answered with an 11-0 surge and went on to lead 54-22 at halftime. Albrecht and McCauley each tallied nine points for Corban during the second quarter.
In the third quarter, Corban gained a 22-17 scoring advantage. Evergreen started the quarter with a 14-9 run, ending with a 3-pointer by Soufi with 5:26 to play that cut the margin to 63-36. The Warriors ended the quarter with a 13-3 run. In the fourth period, Corban outscored the Geoducks 26-19.
Corban shot 48.7% on field goals during the game (37 of 76), while hitting 18 of 44 shots from 3-point range. The Warriors converted 10 of 11 free throws (90.9%) and finished with a 44-32 rebounding margin. Evergreen shot 35.2% from the field (19 of 54). The Geoducks put through 3 of 12 three-pointers and went 17 for 21 (81.0%) at the free throw line.
Evergreen will play at home again on Saturday, Jan. 31 against Bushnell University. Tipoff at the CRC is scheduled for 3 p.m. PST.
