Horacio Godinez (So.) from The Evergreen State College claimed the championship in the 141-pound weight class at the Pacific Open on Sunday, Jan. 25. Also for Evergreen,
Alex Fenwick (Fr.) at 149 pounds, and
Cole Torres (Fr.) at 184 pounds, placed second in their respective weight classes, while
Hassan Abdi (Jr.) earned fourth place at 157 pounds. The tournament was hosted by Pacific University. Seven wrestlers competed for the Geoducks.
Godinez began the 149-pound bracket with a bye. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Fermin Carrillo with a fall at 1:17. Godinez defeated Carter Nix from Clackamas Community College with a 17-(-1) technical fall early in the second period. In the championship match, Godinez pinned Cael Sanders from Umpqua Community College at the 2:23 mark.
During the tournament, Godinez went 3-0 and is now 29-3 on the season. He has won three tournament titles, placed second once, and finished third two times. Godinez is ranked #19 in the NAIA individual rankings for the 141-pound weight class.
Fenwick went 4-1 at Pacific on his way to placing third in the 149-pound weight class. He opened the tournament with a 12-9 win over Joseph Downing from Southwestern Oregon Community College. Fenwick held a slim 10-9 lead but secured the victory on a reversal with 42 seconds left in the match.Â
In the quarterfinals, Nico Yazzolino, competing unattached, defeated Fenwich with a 23-4 technical fall. After receiving a bye in the consolation second round, Fenwick earned a fall at 2:12 against Chet Shumaker of Treasure Valley Community College in the third round of consolation play. During the consolation semifinals, Fenwick downed unattached wrestler Nathan Martinez 19-12 after trailing 12-9 at the start of the third period. Fenwick pinned unattached athlete Mazon Townsend at the 4:09 mark in the third place match.
Torres started the 184-pound bracket with a fall at 4:23 in his match against Nico Sigrah from Treasure Valley CC. Torres trailed 12-5 before earning a reversal with 1:08 left in the second period and then pinning Sigrah 31 seconds later. In the quarterfinals, Torres registered a 22-7 win by technical fall versus Amin Qouchbane of Clackamas CC. In the semifinals, unattached wrestler Mark DelBosque downed Torres with a technical fall 17-2.Â
The consolation semifinals included a win for Torres with a fall at 4:50 in a rematch with Nico Sigrah of TVCC. Torres won the third place match by pinning Owen Scott of TVCC at 0:51. It was the second top-three finish in two weeks for Torres, who finished in second place at 184 pounds during the Evergreen Open on Jan. 18.
For Abdi, the schedule at 157 pounds began with a bye. Abdi pinned unattached competitor Layronz Fraser at 6:22 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Abdi lost 7-3 to Kellen Kolka from Umpqua CC. After moving into the consolation semifinals, Abdi won with a fall at 2:35 against George Kovchegov. In the third place match, Josue Gutierres of Clackamas CC downed Abdi with a 14-3 major decision.
Evergreen will return to action with a dual match at the Costantino Recreation Center on Thursday, Feb. 12. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST.
