OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College received 27 points from
Tony Frohlich-Fair (Sr., F/C), and
Kenzel Massey (So., G) added 12 points, but the Geoducks were defeated by Bushnell University 96-69 on Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Costantino Recreation Center. Cory Johnson earned 24 points, and Keenan Reckamp registered 20 points for the Beacons.
The Cascade Collegiate Conference men's basketball win improved Bushnell to 11-10 on the season, 8-6 in the conference. Evergreen moved to 3-13 overall, 3-11 in the CCC.
Frohlich-Fair's 27 points represented his 10th consecutive game with at least 20 points. He leads the Cascade Collegiate Conference and is fourth in the NAIA with 25.8 points per game. On Saturday, he also earned a team-high seven rebounds to go with three assists and one steal.
Massey finished the game with 12 points and four rebounds. Frohlich-Fair and Massey each hit two 3-pointers. Frohlich-Fair was 11 of 14 on free throws.Â
Tyler No (Jr., G) contributed seven points for the Geoducks.
Kohrey Bridges (Sr., F) achieved five points, four rebounds, and two assists, while
Jayson Mathews (Jr., G) provided four rebounds and two assists.
Cory Johson was 10 of 20 on field goals and hit two 3-pointers for Bushnell on his way to 24 points. The 20 points from Reckamp featured 6-for-9 shooting from the field, including a 5-for-8 effort from 3-point range. Kaleb Burnett tacked on 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Beacons, as he earned a double-double. Squeeky Johnson scored 12 points, while Rylan Donovan produced nine points and nine rebounds.
Bushnell scored nine of the first 12 points, ending with a jumper by Cory Johnson with 17:18 remaining in the half. Evergreen countered with a 11-4 run to take a 13-12 lead on a jumper by Frohlich-Fair with 14:01 left. A bit later, the Beacons grabbed an 18-14 lead, but Evergreen scored next on a 3-pointer by
Zach Jefferson (Sr., G) at the 12:14 mark.
The Beacons gradually increased their lead and held a 30-20 edge after Reckamp was fouled on a 3-point shot and made all three free throws with 7:45 left in the half. Bushnell was in front 51-35 at halftime. Cory Johnson had 16 points as the break, while Frohlich-Fair had 15 points for Evergreen.
Evergreen fell behind 67-44 after Burnett made two free throws for Bushnell with 13:55 to go. The Geoducks tallied the next nine points, including one 3-pointer each by Bridges and Frohlich-Fair. The trifecta by Frohlich-Fair completed the run and moved Evergreen within 67-53 with 12:21 remaining. The Geoducks were unable get closer to the Beacons.
For the game, Bushnell shot 45.9% on field goals (34 of 74). The Beacons connected on 11 of 34 three-pointers (32.4%) and went 17 of 21 on free throws (81.0%). Evergreen put through 24 of 65 shots (36.9%), while hitting 7 of 21 three-pointers. The Geoducks sank 14 of 20 free throws (70.0%).
Both teams protected the ball as each squad committed just eight turnovers. Bushnell gained a 52-35 rebounding margin, including a 19-10 edge in offensive rebounds.
The Geoducks will return to action on Friday, Feb. 6 at Eastern Oregon University. Game time in La Grande, Oregon, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. PST.
