Formella Contributes Six Kills against Oregon Tech

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. -- Zofia Formella (Jr., MB/OH) from The Evergreen State College provided six kills, while Jayden Vaimaona (Sr., S) added nine assists and seven digs, but the Geoducks lost to Oregon Tech 3-0 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference match on Friday, Oct. 2 at Danny Miles Court. The Owls won the match 25-8, 25-20, 25-15.

Formella earned her six kills with just two attacking errors. Bright Brubaker (Jr., OPP) tacked on four kills for the Geoducks. Sophia Scroggins (Sr., OH) provided a team-high eight digs. Vaimaona topped the Geoducks topped Evergreen with her nine assists, while Riley Mangan (Jr., S/DS) recorded six assists. Mangan also supplied six digs.

Aleksen Tahyer led Oregon Tech with nine kills and just one attacking error while producing a .667 hitting percentage. Kaliko Schilling finished with eight kills and only one attacking error. Tiffini Goss and Alexa Gugliotta each amassed seven kills. Gugliotta also was credited with six block assists, helping the Owls attain 9.0 team total blocks.

Taryn Riley guided the OIT offense with 30 assists. Kaley Whalen ended the match with 19 digs for the Owls.

Oregon Tech held a slim 5-4 advantage in the first set following a kill by Vaimaona for Evergreen. The Owls countered with a 7-0 run to increase their lead to 12-5. The run included two service aces by Emma Kness. Oregon Tech won the set 25-8.

Evergreen owned a 6-4 lead after 10 rallies in the second set, and also led 8-6 following an ace by Scroggins. OIT tallied the next two points to tied the score at 8-8 starting a string of six consecutive ties through 13-13. Before OIT created the sixth tie, Evergreen was in front 13-12 on a kill by Brubaker.

After tying the score, the Owls added two more points and were in front 15-13 on a kill from Thayer. Oregon Tech also led 18-14 after a service ace by Kness. The Geoducks earned the next point to get within three points, and also pulled within 22-19 a bit later, but the Owls claimed the set 25-20.

In the third set, OIT achieved a 10-4 lead oon a kill by Thayer. Evergreen cut the deficit to 12-8 after an OIT attacking error. The Owls added a 5-0 run to grab a 17-8 advantage. Later, a kill by Brubaker pulled Evergreen as close as 19-13, but the Geoducks were unable to get closer. OIT ended the match with a 6-2 run.

The Geoducks will play at Southern Oregon University on Saturday, Oct. 3. Match time in Ashland, Oregon, is set for 6 p.m. PDT.
