OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College men's wrestling team won four matches with pins as the Geoducks downed visiting Linfield University 33-24 at the Costantino Recreation Center on Thursday, Feb. 12. Evergreen, which received votes in the most recent NAIA Men's Wrestling Top 25 Poll, evened its dual match record at 2-2 on the season, while Linfield fell to 4-6 on the season.
It was Senior Night for the Geoducks. Prior to the match, the team honored seniors
Boris Bambalaev and
Andrew Walker Campbell.
During the match, Evergreen forfeited three weight classes, and Linfield forfeited one. Two of Evergreen's forfeits were in the 125-pound and 133-pound weight class, providing Linfield with an early 12-0 lead. Even so, the Geoducks won three consecutive matches by falls to take an 18-12 advantage.
The consecutive pins for Evergreen were earned by
Horacio Godinez (So.) at 141 pounds, Gerardo Hernandez at 149 pounds, and
Hassan Abdi (Jr.) at 157 pounds. Godinez pinned Max Vander Meide of Linfield at 2:39. Godinez, who is ranked #25 in the NAIA at 141 pounds, improved his season record to 30-3. Hernandez was able to pin Fermin Carrillo in less than a minute at the 55-second mark. Abdi registered a fall versus Damon Gasilos midway through the third period at 6:06.Â
Jayms Vilona (Fr.) won in the 165-pound weight class with a 9-7 decision against Lucien Lafebvre. Valona trailed 5-3 during the second period but earned a takedown and a three-point near fall later in the period for a 9-5 advantage. Lefebvre added an escape before the second period ended, and he added one point in the third period, but Valona held on for the win, giving Evergreen a 21-12 lead.
After Walker Campbell won by forfeit at 174 pounds, the Geoducks were in front 27-12 in the team score.
Cole Torres (Fr.) contributed Evergreen's final points with a pin at 5:30 against Trey Dieringer in the 184-pound match.Â
Ethan Ensrud of Linfield won by forfeit in the 197-pound weight class. Camden Roofener of Linfield won by a fall at 2:05 against
Savion Galloway (So.) at 285 pounds.Â
The Geoducks will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 20 and Saturday Feb. 21 at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships in Salem, Oregon. The meet will be hosted by Corban University at the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
