Evergreen Outscores WWU 99-87 as Frohlich-Fair Scores 22, Graham 21

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Tony Frohlich-Fair (Sr., W) scored 22 points and teammate Bradley Graham (Sr., G) earned 21 points as they led The Evergreen State College to a 99-87 win over Walla Walla University on Saturday, Feb. 14 at the Costantino Recreation Center. Frohlich-Fair, who is ranked fourth in the NAIA in scoring with 25.5 points per game, earned 20 or more points for the 14th consecutive game.

The Geoduck improved to 4-16 overall and to 4-14 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. The Wolves fell to 1-23 on the season, 1-17 in the CCC.

Evergreen was in front 49-48 at halftime and led most of the second half. The Geoducks held a 91-81 lead with 4:00 left, but WWU pulled within 93-87 with 45 seconds to play. Evergreen closed out the game by going 6 for 6 at the free throw line.

Frohlich-Fair connected on 8 of 18 field goals and hit 6 of 7 free throws. He earned five rebounds and two steals. Graham made 5 of 10 field goals, including 3 of 5 shots from beyond the 3-point arc. Graham was 8 for 8 at the free throw line, including 4 for 4 in the final minute. Tyler No (Jr., G) tallied nine points to go with four rebounds and two steals. Jayson Mathews (Jr., G) added 10 points and four assists while sinking 4 of 4 free throws. Jemoi Davis (Jr., G) led the Geoducks with seven boards.

Tyler No shoots a jumper for the Geoducks.Zach Jefferson (Sr., G), Kohrey Bridges (Sr., F), and Jacob Laff (So., W) each scored nine points for Evergreen. Laff also contributed five rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Bridges hit three 3-point shots, while Jefferson supplied two steals.

For Walla Walla, center Soren Dalan registered a double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds. He was 10 for 12 on field goals and blocked two shots. Jordan Jackson, a guard, added 22 points and eight rebounds for WWU. Jackson was 4 of 8 on 3-point shots.

Evergreen grabbed a 9-3 lead following a 3-point basket by Graham with 17:34 to play in the first half. The Geoducks eventually led 25-12 at the 13:33 mark after Bridges made back-to-back shots from 3-point range. Just over six minutes later, Bridges hit a third 3-pointer to give Evergreen a similar advantage at 39-26 with 7:22 on the clock.

The Wolves battled back during a 14-3 run that reduced the Geoducks' lead to 42-40 with 3:16 left. Frohlich-Fair gave Evergreen a 47-42 edge on a free throw at the 2:09 mark. WWU pulled as close as one point twice before the break, including 49-48 when Reese Snellman hit two free throws with 14 seconds to go for the final points of the half.

Walla Walla earned the first points of the second half on a jumper by Jackson to put the Wolves in front 50-49. The score remained closed for several minutes, and the teams were tied at 53-53 and 56-56. Evergreen held a 61-60 lead after Dalan put in a layup with 13:39 to go. The Geoducks scored 12 of the next 16 points for a 73-64 advantage following an offensive rebound and layup by Laff with 10:16 remaining.

Evergreen kept the lead the rest of the way. WWU got as close as 76-71 on a 3-pointer by Jackson with just over eight minutes to go. The Geoducks tallied the next seven points for an 83-71 lead. 

After a 3-pointer by Graham provided Evergreen with a 91-81 advantage at the 4:00 mark, the Wolves attempted to rally. WWU cut the margin to six points twice, including 93-87 on two free throws by JT Fenz with 45 second on the clock. Graham ended the rally with 31 seconds left when hit two free throws for the Geoducks.

The Evergreen offense shot 47.9% for the game (34 of 71), while converting 9 of 24 three-point shots (37.5%). The Geoducks were 22 for 26 on free throws (84.6%), including 14 for 14 in the second half. WWU shot 45.6% overall (31 of 68). The Wolves made 6 of 18 long-range shots (33.3%) and went 19 of 27 (70.4%) at the free throw line. 

Evergreen will host Northwest University at the CRC on Tuesday, Feb. 17 in the final home game of the season. It will be Senior Night for the Geoducks. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. PST.
