Adam Earns 11 Points and 7 Rebounds in Loss to Northwest

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Freshman guard Habiba Adam scored 11 points and hauled down seven rebounds for The Evergreen State College on Tuesday, Feb. 17, but Northwest University defeated the Geoducks 81-51 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball game at the Costantino Recreation Center. Jenna Glenzel (Sr., G) tacked on nine points, nine boards, and three steals for Evergreen.

Kaleah Medeiros of NU led all scorers with 28 points for the Eagles. She was 12 for 17 from the field and 4 for 5 on 3-point shots. She also grabbed six rebounds. 

The win advanced the Eagles to 9-18 on the season, 5-14 in the CCC. Evergreen moved to 1-21 overall, 1-18 in the CCC.

In addition to Adam and Glenzel, other key scorers for the Geoducks were Sahara Soufi (Jr., G), Bayleigh Harder (Sr., F/C), and Melissa Blanke (Jr., G), each with eight points. Harder earned five rebounds, while Soufi and Blanke both grabbed four boards.

Glenzel earned a game-high six defensive rebounds and blocked two shots. Harder also blocked two shots. Adam led all players with six offensive rebounds. Jesselle Victo Castillo (Jr., PG) was credited with five assists.

For NU, Medeiros was followed on the offensive chart by Ella Whitaker with 15 points. Whitaker also provided the Eagles with 10 rebounds and three steals. Hailey Monte contributed 12 points, while Ellie DeWaard supplied seven boards.

Victo Castillo opened the game with two free throws for Evergreen, but NU tallied the next 10 points, starting with one 3-pointer each by Medeiros and Jersey McGehee. Evergreen reduced the margin to 10-6 with a free throw by Glenzel at the 3:59 mark and a 3-pointer from Harder with 3:05 on the clock. The first quarter ended with the Eagles holding a 13-8 lead.

Each team scored once in the first minute of the second quarter on a jumper by Medeiros for NU and a layup by Blanke for Evergreen. The Eagles tallied six of the next eight points to expand their lead to 21-12 after a layup by Ellie Bost with 6:27 to play in the half.

The Geoducks pulled within 21-17 when Adam sank a 3-point shot with 5:20 left and cut NU's lead to 21-19 on a jumper by Soufi with 4:40 to go. The Eagles scored the next eight points for a 29-19 advantage after a 3-pointer by Medeiros at the 2:20 mark. Evergreen scored the last five points of the half, all at the free throw line. Glenzel earned the final two free throws with one second left to move Evergreen within 29-24.

Northwest University started the second half with a 13-2 run for a 42-26 lead. The offensive surge included three 3-pointers. Evergreen achieved the next six points, ending with a layup by Glenzel to cut the lead to 42-32 with 3:39 remaining in the third quarter. NU finished the quarter with an 11-0 run for a 53-32 edge.

The Eagles were 6 for 10 on 3-point shots during the third quarter. NU outscored the Geoducks 28-19 in the fourth quarter.

For the game, NU shot 41.9% on field goals (31 of 72), including 14 for 35 (40.0%) from 3-point range. The Eagles gained a 51-45 rebounding edge. Evergreen shot 22.4% from the field (15 of 67) and made 3 of 23 three-point attempts. The Geoducks were 18 for 26 (69.2%) at the free throw line.

Evergreen will conclude the season with a CCC game at Warner Pacific University on Thursday, Feb. 19. Game time in Portland, Oregon, is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. PST.
