DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Evergreen State College women's wrestling team competed in the Grand View Open at Dave Sisam Arena on Saturday, Feb. 7. Five Geoducks represented Evergreen during the tournament, hosted by Grand View University.
Competing at the Grand View Open were colleges from various divisions. The tournament featured NCAA Division I teams from the University of Iowa and Lehigh University (Conn.), along with NCAA Division II teams from Fort Hays State University (Kan.), Grand Valley State University (Mich.), and Quincy University (Mo.).
There were eight teams, including Evergreen, ranked in the NAIA Women's Wrestling Top 20 Poll released on Feb. 5. Evergreen, ranked #18, was joined at the Grand View Open by #1 Life University (Ga.), #2 Grand View, #5 William Penn University (Iowa), #7 Wayland Baptist University (Texas), #10 Missouri Valley College, #13 Texas Wesleyan University, and #19 Baker University (Kan.). Several unranked NAIA teams also participated.
In addition to teams from the NAIA and the NCAA, the meet also included community college teams as well as unattached athletes.
Leading Evergreen's efforts at the tournament was
Haley Le (So.), who is tied for #13 in the NAIA individual rankings for the 138-pound weight class. Le went 3-2 during the meet, losing only to a pair of athletes from NCAA Division I teams.
Le opened the bracket with a win by a 10-0 technical fall against Mariam Shariq from Baker. In the second round, Le added another 10-0 technical fall, this time against nationally ranked Samantha Barragan of Texas Wesleyan, who was listed at #3 in the NAIA. In the quarterfinals, Lilly Luft from the University of Iowa downed Le with a 13-3 technical fall. Le recovered with a technical fall by a 10-0 score against NCAA Division II athlete Peyton Hellmann from Fort Hays State in the consolation fourth round. In the fifth round of consolation play, Le was defeated 16-10 by Kryssceah Ravenelle from Lehigh.
Erica Grant (Jr.) represented the Geoducks in the 131-pound weight class. She was defeated by Kaidance Greg from Askren Wrestling Academy in the first round 11-0 on a technical fall. Grant recorded a technical fall to win 13-2 in the first consolation round against Neve Barragan of Waldorf University (Iowa). Grant was eliminated from the bracket by Tiyanna Mack of Life University on an 11-0 technical fall during the second round of consolation play.
At 103 pounds,
Karen Salas (So.) wrestled for Evergreen. She faced a strong schedule in her bracket, beginning with a matchup against Isabelle Apple of Grand View, tied for #3 in the NAIA. Apple defeated Salas 10-0 by technical fall. Salas won in the first round of consolation action by pinning Jaidyn Alvarado from Fort Hays State at 1:37. In the consolation second round, Lita Cruz from Grand View pinned Salas at 0:24.
Also competing for Evergreen were
Leah Wallway (Fr.) in the 110-pound bracket and
Zeta Lee (So.) in the 117-pound bracket. All of the Geoducks participated in the Gold brackets. The tournament also included Silver brackets.
Evergreen will be back in action at the 2025-26 Cascade Collegiate Conference Women's Wrestling Championships on Sunday, March 1. The CCC Championships will be held at Riehn Arena in Ashland, Oregon.
