Soufi and Victo Castillo Lead Geoducks against Yotes

CALDWELL, Idaho -- Sahara Soufi (Jr., G) and Jesselle Victo Castillo (Jr., PG) led The Evergreen State College in scoring on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the College of Idaho, but the Yotes defeated the Geoducks 81-42 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference game. College of Idaho entered the game having received votes in the most recent NAIA Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll.

Soufi topped the Geoducks on Saturday with a season-high 14 points. She has reached double digits three of Evergreen's last four games. Soufi hit a pair of 3-point baskets and also earned three rebounds. Victo Castillo added 10 points and six rebounds against the Yotes. 

With the win, College of Idaho improved to 18-6 on the season, including 12-4 in the CCC. Evergreen moved to 0-19 overall, 0-15 in the CCC.

Jenna Glenzel (Sr., G) and Habiba Adam (Fr., G) each provided Evergreen with five points. In addition, Adam grabbed seven rebounds, while Glenzel contributed six rebounds, five steals, and one blocked shot. Glenzel leads the CCC and ranks fourth in the NAIA with 4.1 steals per game for the season. Glenzel has recorded 78 steals in Evergreen's 19 games.

C of I was paced by four players with double-digit scoring against the Geoducks. Maiya Hardy achieved 12 points, eight rebounds, and two steals. Riley Beck also tallied 12 points, while providing the Yotes with seven rebounds, three blocks, and two steals. Kylie Waltermeyer finished with 11 points, eight boards, and two blocked shots. Brooke Beresford supplied 10 points, six rebounds, and two blocked shots. Taryn Riley led College of Idaho with five assists, while Anna Mooney was credited with four assists.

The Yotes produced the game's first nine points and led 18-3 after Annie Stinar hit a 3-pointer with 4:37 left in the opening quarter. Soufi stopped the surge with a jump shot 22 seconds later to start an 8-0 run, as Evergreen pulled within 18-11 at the 2:16 mark. The run also included one 3-point basket each by Soufi and Amaialyne Cepeda (Sr., G).  

College of Idaho tallied the final seven points in the first period and took a 25-11 advantage into the second quarter. Adam sank a 3-point shot for the Geoducks to start the second quarter, but Evergreen was unable to get closer than 11 points. Even so, the Geoducks trailed by just 12 points at 36-24 following a layup by Haleigh Hanson (So., C) with 3:18 on the clock. A strong finish to the quarter by C of I gave the Yotes a 44-24 lead at the break.

In the second half, College of Idaho gradually pulled away. For the game, C of I connected on 38.0% of its field goals (30 of 79) after over 40% in the first and second quarters. The Yotes finished 7 of 32 (21.9%) on 3-pointers and hit all 14 of their free throws.

Evergreen shot 28.3% from the field (17 of 60), while making 5 of 20 three-point attempts. The Geoducks were 3 of 4 (75.0%) at the free throw line. Evergreen earned nine steals on College of Idaho's 10 turnovers. 

The Geoducks will host Lewis-Clark State College on Friday, Feb. 13 at the Costantino Recreation Center. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m. PST.
