OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Ava Fike from Park University Gilbert (Ariz.) scored two goals to offset a goal by
Isabella Williams (So., D) of The Evergreen State College, as the Buccaneers edged the Geoducks 2-1 on Thursday, Aug. 20 at Geoduck Pitch. It was the season opener for both teams, as Park moved to 1-0 and Evergreen fell to 0-1.
Fike scored once in each half. She earned the first goal at 23:59 on a 20-yard shot into the lower right corner after making a move toward the center of the field. The Buccaneers remained in front 1-0 at halftime.
Williams created a 1-1 tie with a goal for the Geoducks at 57:56. She scored from 25 yards into an empty net following a defensive misplay by Park-Gilbert.
Fike tallied the game-winning goal about 12 minutes later as the clock reached 69:45. The play began on the left side of the field with a throw-in by Yadira Bernal of Park-Gilbert. Fike received the ball and set up for her shot, a 30-yard strike.
For the game, Park University Gilbert held a 20-3 margin in total shots and a 10-1 edge in shots on goal. Park-Gilbert owned an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Journey Morimoto was in goal for all 90 minutes for the Buccaneers but did not register a save.
Melina Grijalva (Jr., GK) registered two saves for Evergreen in the first half.
Katie Gresham (Sr., G) made six saves for the Geoducks in the second half.
Evergreen will return to action on Tuesday, Aug. 25 with an exhibition game at Tacoma Community College. Game time is set for 12 p.m. PDT.
