OLYMPIA, Wash. --
Zofia Formella (Jr., MB/OH) registered 14 kills and
Sophia Scroggins (Sr., OH) added 13 kills and 11 digs, as The Evergreen State College defeated the University of Puget Sound 3-0 in an exhibition volleyball match on Friday, Aug. 28 at the Costantino Recreation Center. Evergreen won 25-19, 26-24, 25-20.
Evergreen remained 1-3 on the season. Puget Sound remained 0-0.
Scroggins hit .417 and Formella added a .367 hitting percentage.
Bright Brubaker (Jr., OPP) tacked on five kills, while
Jaci Yamada (So., DS/L) contributed seven digs.
Jayden Vaimaona (Sr., S) supplied the Geoducks with 198 assists and six digs.
Riley Mangan (Jr., S/DS) finished with 13 assists.
Mikayla Kelly (Grad., MB/OPP) accumulated four block assists.
The Loggers were led by Maddie Badger with eight kills and by Aubrey Tanner with 13 assists and seven digs. Gena Fink and Mia Fedota each amassed five kills.
Evergreen surged out to a 5-1 lead in the first set. Puget Sound cut the margin to 6-5 and 7-6, but the Geoducks responded with a 9-2 run for a 16-8 lead. The run ended with five consecutive points for Evergreen, including two kills by Formella and one kill by Scroggins. A bit later, the Geoducks owned a 19-10 advantage following a Puget Sound service error. Puget Sound eventually pulled with 23-19 on a kill from Badger, but Formella added a kill and the Loggers committed a serving error, as Evergreen won the set.
In the second set, Puget Sound took a 7-1 advantage. Evergreen cut the margin to 7-5, before the Logger scored again. Puget Sound remained in front until the Geoducks tied the set at 13-13 on a service ace by
Paron Holmes (Jr., DS/L). Evergreen moved in front 14-13 on a combo block by Kelly and Scroggins. The set remained close the rest of the way.
Puget Sound led 21-18 before the Geoducks tacked on four points in a row for a 22-21 edge. Three points later, the Geoducks led 24-22 following a kill from Formella and a service ace by
Annalise Orlowski (Fr., MB).The Loggers added kills by Badger and Camryn Shigemasa to tie the score, but a service error by Puget Sound and a kill by Formella sent Evergreen to a 26-24 win.
The Loggers scored the first two points of the third set. The Geoducks countered with an 8-0 run and also led 10-4. After Puget Sound reduced the lead to 13-10, the Geoducks went on a 6-2 run, including one kill each from Kelly, Formella and Brubaker, for a 19-12 lead. The run ended with a block by Kelly and Brubaker. Puget Sound eventually pulled as close as 20-18 and 20-19 before the Geoducks took the set 25-20.
Evergreen will be back in action with the first match of Cascade Collegiate Conference action on Friday, Sept. 4, when the Geoducks will host Eastern Oregon University, ranked #2 in the NAIA Preseason Poll. Match time at the Costantino Recreation Center is set for 6 p.m. PDT.
