Box Score BILLINGS, Mont. – It figured that a match pitting the top two teams in Cascade Collegiate Conference men's soccer would be a thriller, and that's exactly what occurred here on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
The Evergreen State College (8-0-4 overall, 7-0-4 CCC) rallied from a two-goal second half deficit to earn a 2-2 double overtime tie with conference co-leading Rocky Mountain College (10-3-2, 8-1-2).
With one weekend remaining on the conference schedule, there is now a four-way tie between Evergreen, Rocky Mountain, Southern Oregon and Corban, atop the conference table.
The Geoducks, who have already qualified for the eight-team conference postseason tournament, close out their regular season next weekend with games against Northwest Christian at 1 p.m. Friday in Springfield, Ore., and versus Corban at 6 p.m. Saturday in Salem, Ore.
While it will be interesting to see how all of that works out, the focus Sunday was on a match pitting defending conference champion Rocky Mountain against an Evergreen team that had yet to suffer a defeat.
After 62 minutes it looked like the Geoducks were going to take their first loss of the campaign as the Bears got goals from Tiago Ewald in the 26th minute and penalty kick tally – following a disputed foul call in the box – from Luca Wiechers in the 62nd minute to go on top, 2-0
Having been outshot by an 8-2 margin in the first half and not having put a lot of pressure on Rocky's defense in the early part of the second period, the Geoducks nevertheless swung the momentum of the match with two quick retaliatory strikes.
The first came at 63:07 when, following a flurry of Evergreen shots and Rocky Mountain blocks in the box – including a shot by
Charlie Kramer and save by Bears keeper Cole Catlin –
Christian Segovia knocked the ball into the back of the net to cut his team's deficit to 2-1. For Segovia it was goal number two this season.
Less than three minutes later, at 65:32,
Ryan Porch served a free kick into a group of players in the box. The ball took a bounce and
Sasa Yodkerepauprai nodded it home for his first goal of the campaign.
There were few scoring chances in the two overtimes, Rocky Mountain getting the best chance with about five minutes to play when Marco Kummerle got past the defense. Evergreen keeper
Ben Stevenson came off his line quickly, however, to get the final of his four saves.
"The guys got better today," Evergreen head coach
John Purtteman said. "They keep finding different ways to get results. Rocky defends well in the middle of the park. They press well as a group. I was proud of the guys for their willingness to buy in to playing a bit more direct."
Rocky owned a 15-6 advantage in shots and took seven corner kicks to zero for the Geoducks.
