COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – The
Geoducks women's volleyball team opened CCC play on the road against the Walla Walla Wolves. Sophia
Scroggins (nine kills and five blocks) and
Kaiyah Brown (eight kills and three blocks) led the attack for the
Geoducks (1-4, 1-0 CCC) as they bested WWU (0-3, 0-2 CCC) in straight sets 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-15).
The first set decided the match as it was only set in the contest that Evergreen didn't win by at least a nine-point margin.
The Wolves struck first and
Jessica Mitchell opened the scoring for the
Geoducks on the following point. At the first timeout of the set, Evergreen found themselves up 10-5.
The
Geoducks kept up their dominance and held a 20-13 lead that forced the second timeout of the set for WWU. This timeout was massive for Walla Walla as they rattled off an impressive, 7-1 run to cut their deficit to one point, 21-20.
The
Geoducks used a timeout to regain their composure and cut the moment being built by the Wolves. Evergreen held on to their lead and won the nail-biter set, 25-23.
After the first set, the tone of the match changed. The
Geoducks had all the momentum and confidence and closed out the following two sets (25-16, 25-15) without minimal resistance.
Mitchell led the team in assists with 19 assists and Jenna
Glenzel followed up with 14 of their own.
Rylee Grams led the contest in digs with 20, followed by
Jadyn Kallenberger with 11.
TESC recorded five aces in the contest from Mitchell (2),
Kallenberger (2) and one from
Alice Bennett.
This win breaks the four-game losing streak for Evergreen and marks the inaugural first win for head coach Carissa Bounds in her first conference contest at the helm of the volleyball program.
The taste of victory is short-lived for the
Geoducks and they now set their sights on their next match against conference opponent LC State tomorrow at 5 p.m. More information available at gogeoducks.com
