PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Evergreen State College battled Multnomah into five sets, but the Lions won 3-2 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball match on Saturday, Oct. 19.
Lucendy Perez (Sr. OH) registered 17 kills and 23 digs, while
Sophia Scroggins (So., OPP/MB) tacked on 16 kills for the Geoducks. Multnomah won 25-21, 30-32, 25-14, 23-25, 15-11.
Also providing key contributions for Evergreen were
Molly Packer (Jr., L),
Maloree Calzadillas (Sr., S), and Jessicas Mitchell (Jr., S). Packer piled up 36 digs to tie her season high. Calzadillas earned 28 assists and 18 digs. Mitchell finished with 22 assists. Perez and
Marin Collins (Jr., MB) each provided three block solos.
Evergreen amassed 61 kills, while the Lions had 60 kills. The Geoducks also held a 101-98 edge in digs. The Geoducks fell to 4-15 overall, 2-15 in the CCC.
For Multnomah, JahNay Jardine connected for 22 kills, while Jade Ilaoa added 16 kills. Zoe Schuele and Sophia Hernandez both achieved 26 assists. Lauren Porter accumulated 35 digs. Th Lions improved to 2-18 on the season, 2-14 in the CCC.
The first two points of the match were kills by Scroggin. The Geoducks led 3-1 before trailing 5-3. A bit later, the Lions took a 13-10 lead on an attacking error by Evergreen. Multnomah eventually claimed margins of 19-16 and 23-20. The Geoducks scored next on a kill by Scroggins, but the Lions won 25-21 with two consecutive points, ending with a kill by Myckayla Shaver.
Evergreen bounced back in a close and lengthy second set, ultimately winning 32-30. Multnomah held a 10-6 lead, but the Geoducks went on a 14-7 run to grab a 20-17 advantage on a kill by Perez. The Lions rallied and used a 7-3 run of their own to earn the first set point at 24-23 following a kill by Ilaoa.
The Geoducks kept the set alive with a kill by
Ashley Walker Campbell (Jr., S). Multnomah achieved the next set point at 25-24, but Evergreen prevailed later, as a hitting error by the Lions gave the Geoducks a 31-30 lead, andÂ
Kaiyah Brown (Sr., MB) provided the winning kill.Â
In the third set, Evergreen opened with a 3-0 lead as two kills by Brown surrounded a kill by Scroggins. Multnomah recorded the next four points. Later, a service ace by Packer pulled the Geoducks within 10-8, and a kill by Scroggins cut the Lions' margin to 14-11. Multnomah put together an 11-3 run to close the set with a 25-14 win.Â
A kill by Jardine gave Multnomah a 6-3 lead in the fourth set, and another kill from Jardine resulted in an 11-7 advantage. Evergreen pulled within 11-10 three rallies later on a block by Brown. The Lions eventually held a 21-14 lead. Even so, Evergreen pulled within 22-20 and 23-21 on kills by Perez. After a block supplied by Brown, Perez added three consecutive kills, and the Geoducks won the set 25-23.
Multnomah took a 4-0 lead in the on a combo block by Shaver and Sydney Priebe in the fifth set. Evergreen battled back to cut the margin to 7-6. The Lions scored four of the next five points for an 11-7 lead, but Evergreen moved within 11-10 on a combo block by Brown and Perez. Multnomah completed the match with a 4-1 run for a 15-11 victory.
Evergreen will host Northwest University in CCC action on Tuesday, Oct. 22. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m. PDT at the Costantino Recreation Center.
