Packer Contributes 18 Digs, but Northwest Downs Geoducks

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Junior libero Molly Packer registered 18 digs for The Evergreen State College against Northwest University on Tuesday, Oct. 22, but the Eagles won the volleyball match 3-0, at the Costantino Recreation Center. Packer has earned 10 or more digs in 19 of 20 matches this year and has 384 digs for the season. She is averaging 5.19 digs per set.

Set scores for the Eagles were 25-19, 25-19, 25-14, as NU advanced its record to 11-13 overall, 6-10 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Evergreen fell to 4-16 on the season, 4-12 in the CCC.

Lucendy Perez (Sr., OH) provided 14 digs for the Geoducks and led Evergreen with seven kills. Ashley Walker Campbell (Jr., OPP) provided six kills with no attacking errors and a .462 hitting percentage. Maloree Calzadillas (Sr., S) was credited with 15 assists.

For NU, Kaitlyn Mickle recorded 10 kills, while Aubree Dees tacked on eight kills. Azaria Johnson hit .500 with seven kills for the Eagles. On defense, Ellie Van Berkum made 18 digs and Morgan Harter added 13 digs. Harter led all players with 32 assists.

Evergreen led 4-2 in the first set with three of the points on kills by Sophia Scroggins (So., OPP/MB), Perez, and Calzadillas. The Eagles responded with a 5-0 run that included two service aces by Masa Spela-Jarc. The Geoducks tied the score at 7-7 with a combo block by Zofia Formella (Fr., MB) and Yasmin Dilworth (Sr., OH), but NU surged out to a 12-7 lead.

Dilworth produced a kill several points later to pull Evergreen within 12-9. The Geoducks trailed by just three points two more times, including 17-14, but the Eagles completed the set with an 8-5 run.

The Geoducks grabbed a 4-3 edge in the second set. NU countered with a 4-0 run that featured two kills by Johnson. Evergreen tallied two of the next three points to move as close as 8-6. After the Eagles took a 12-6 lead, TESC reduced the margin to 15-12 on a kill by Formella. The Geoducks were within 18-15 following a kill by Walker Campbell. NU created a 7-4 run to win the set 25-19.

In the third set, the teams were deadlocked at 4-4 before the Eagles won four consecutive rallies. The Geoducks reduced the lead to 10-7 several points later when Walker Campbell and Kaiyah Brown (Sr., MB) combined on a block. Evergreen trailed 15-11 after a kill by Perez, but the Eagles completed the match with a 10-3 run. 

Evergreen will play against Eastern Oregon University at the Costantino Recreation Center on Friday, Oct. 25. Match time for the CCC contest is scheduled for 6 p.m. PDT.
