EUGENE, Ore. -- The Evergreen State College played three highly competitive sets with Bushnell University in volleyball on Saturday, Nov. 2, and junior setter
Jessica Mitchell provided the Geoducks with 16 assists and 11 digs, but the Beacons won the match 25-22, 25-23, 25-20. Hailey Haider led Bushnell with 21 kills while earning a .381 hitting percentage.
Bushnell upped its record to 18-10 overall, 13-7 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Evergreen dropped to 4-20 on the season, 4-16 in the CCC.
Ashley Walker Campbell (Jr., OPP) and
Lucendy Perez (Sr., OH) each paced the Geoducks with eight kills.
Sophia Scroggins (So., OPP/MB) tacked on seven kills.
Molly Packer (Jr., L) led all players on both teams with 13 digs. Walker Campbell led TESC with three block assists. The Geoducks accumulated 37 kills and 51 digs.
Heider's 21 kills provided much of Bushnell's attack, as the Beacons finished the match with 49 kills overall. Leah Agost added seven kills. Assists for the Beacons were split between Katie Belitz with 25 and Elijah Sanders with 20. Bella Parque recorded 12 digs and Amyah Semau achieved 10 digs. Jessie Matthews was credited with four block assists.
Evergreen went on a 4-0 run in the first set to take a 16-13 lead. The run began with a kill by Walker Campbell and ended with a kill by
Zofia Formella (Fr., MB). Bushnell responded with three consecutive points, ending with a service ace by Heider, to tie the score.
A bit later, Evergreen broke an 18-18 deadlock with a kill by Scroggins and a hitting error by Bushnell for a 20-18 edge. The Beacons rallied to take a 22-20 lead. Evergreen cut the margin to 22-21 on a kill by Perez, and moved within 24-22 on a kill by Walker Campbell, but Bushnell ended the set with a kill from Makenna Mosher.
The Beacons zoomed out to a 10-4 lead in the second set, but TESC reduced the margin to 13-10 on a kil by Walker Campbell. Bushnell eventually led 18-12 before Evergreen pulled as close as 23-22 The Beacons scored next on a kil by Belitz, only to see
Kaiyah Brown (Sr., MB) register a kill for the Geoducks. Heider was credited with a kill on the next rally, sending Bushnell to a 25-23 win.
There were 13 ties in the third set. Evergreen took the lead 10 times following the ties, including 17-16 on a service error by the Beacons. The Geoducks added another point before Bushnell went on a 5-0 surge for a 21-18 lead. Agost completed the run with a kill. The Beacons took the set 25-20.
Evergreen will take on Southern Oregon University at the Costantino Recreation Center on Friday, Nov. 6. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m. PST.
