OLYMPIA, Wash. --
Sophia Scroggins (So., OPP/MB) registered 12 kills and
Yasmin Dilworth (Sr., OH) added 10 kills and a .368 hitting percentage, but The Evergreen State College fell to Pacific Lutheran University, 3-1, in an exhibition match at the Costantino Recreation Center on Wednesday, Aug. 28. The Lutes won 25-23, 25-18, 19-25, 26-24.
Molly Packer (Jr., L) provided the Geoducks with match-high 28 digs.
Maloree Calzadillas (Sr., S) earned 23 assists while
Jessica Mitchell (Jr., S) finished with 12 assists. Evergreen amassed 22.5 team total blocks, including 22 block assists.
Kaiyah Brown (Sr., MB) led the way with eight total blocks, while
Marin Collins (So., MB) added seven and Scroggins achieved five.
Claire Hindman and Bailey Johnson each recorded 11 kills for the Lutes. Hindman finished with a .647 hitting percentage with 11 kills and no errors on 17 total attacks. Makenna Jackson was credited with 13 digs for PLU, while Savanna Colliado tacked on 12 digs. Alexis Eggert supplied four block assists.
The match was close throughout. In the first set, Evergreen held a 13-11 lead after a kill by Scroggins. Pacific Lutheran took a 16-14 lead, but five consecutive points gave the Geoducks a 19-16 edge following a PLU attacking error. Evergreen also led 23-21 after back-to-back kills by Brown and Dilworth. The Lutes claimed the next four points to win the set, 25-23.
PLU grabbed a 12-7 advantage in the second set and held off the Geoducks. Evergreen pulled within 20-16 on a kill by Brown but couldn't get closer. The Geoducks were within 22-18 before three consecutive rallied went to the Lutes as PLU took a 2-0 lead in the match.
Evergreen started the third set with strong play that provided the home team with a 9-2 lead that featured two kills each by Scroggins and Brown. The Lutes ate into the lead and eventually moved within 14-13. The Geoducks tacked on four consecutive points for an 18-13 advantage and won the set 25-19.
The fourth set was a good battle by both teams, with PLU eventually creating a 20-16 lead on a kill by Julissa Pernsteiner. Evergreen pulled within 22-20 after a kill fromÂ
Lucendy Perez (Sr., OH) and cut the margin to a single point when the Lutes committed an attacking error on the next rally.
PLU increased its lead to 24-21 with back-to-back kills by Johnson, but Evergreen put together three consecutive points to tie the set. The tying point was earned at the end of a lengthy rally that featured several great digs by the Geoducks. Pacific Lutheran earned the next two points for a 26-24 win.
Up next for the Geoducks is a match against Walla Walla University on Friday, Sept. 6 at the Costantino Recreation Center. The Cascade Collegiate Conference match is set to begin at 2 p.m. (PDT).
