OLYMPIA, Wash. --
Sophia Scroggins (So., OPP/MB) led The Evergreen State College with five kills and five block assists, but the Walla Walla Wolves defeated the Geoducks, 3-0, on Friday, Sept. 6 at the Costantino Recreation Center. The Geoducks lost a very close first set, 27-25, before Walla Walla took the match with 25-14 and 25-16 wins.
Walla Walla improved to 3-2 overall, 2-1 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Evergreen fell to 0-5 on the season, 0-1 in the CCC.
Evergreen grabbed a 9-5 lead in the first set and held a 13-7 advantage following a 3-0 run that ended with a service ace by
Lucendy Perez (Sr., OH). The Geoducks owned a 17-10 lead after a service ace by
Jessica Mitchell (Jr., S). Walla Walla recovered by going on an 8-5 run that cut the margin to 22-18.Â
After Evergreen took a 24-20 lead on a kill by
Yasmin Dilworth (Sr., OH), the Wolves put together a five-point surge to move in front 25-24. Scroggins pounded a kill to tie the score, but Walla Walla earned the net two points for a 27-25 victory.
In the second set, WWU led 16-8 after 24 points and held a 20-10Â advantage.
Kaiyah Brown (Sr., MB) added the net point for Evergreen, but Walla Walla went on to win the set 25-14.
The Wolves surged out to an 11-3 lead in the third set. Evergreen bounced back with a 7-1 run to cut the margin to 12-10. Dilworth, Scroggins, and Perez each provided a kill during the run, while
Joy Miyazawa (Fr., S/DS) contributed a service ace. Walla Walla held a slim 14-12 advantage four points later, but the Wolves pulled away with a 6-2 run on their way to a 25-16 win.
Scroggins' five kills were matched by Perez and
Marin Collins (Jr., MB) for the Geoducks. Perez had no attacking errors and .294 hitting percentage.
Maloree Calzadillas (Sr., S) finished with 12 assists, and Mitchell earned nine assists.
Molly Packer (Jr., L) topped Evergreen with 10 digs.
Three Wolves ended the match with double-digit kills. Sahara Browning led the way with 14 kills, with Natalia Jimenez recording 13 kills and Femke Eising providing 12. Danielle Faamausili paced Walla Walla with 22 assists. Idalis Bedore added 16 digs. Melissa Monterroza was credited with five service aces.Â
Evergreen will host Lewis-Clark State College on Saturday, Sept. 7 at the CRC. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. PDT.
