McMINNVILLE, Ore. -- The Evergreen State College women's soccer team was led by goalkeeper
Anna Varela (Jr.), who earned nine saves, but Linfield University scored once in each half to defeat the Geoducks 2-0 on Monday evening, Sept. 2. Evergreen fell to 0-2 on the season, while the Wildcats moved to 1-0.
Linfield grabbed a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when Rae Gerkin scored following a corner kick. Mia Curtaz and Amalia Tufts earned assists on the play. Varela registered eight of her nine saves in the first half as she kept the Geoducks within one goal at the break. The Wildcats held a 13-2 advantage in shots at halftime.
Alexandra Foley (Sr., D) of Evergreen forced Linfield goalie Alexa Fritz to make a save on a low shot at 43:32.
The Wildcats scored early in the second half on a shot by Sidra Griffin on an assist from Curtaz. Neither team scored during the final 44 minutes.
For the game, Linfield achieved a 21-4 edge in shots and an 11-3 margin in shots on goal. Evergreen's shots on target were by Foley,
Danean Wurlitzer (Sr., M) and
Chloe Bafus (Jr., F). The shot by Bafus was saved by Fritz at 58:54. Fritz finished with three saves for the Wildcats. Each team was called for just two fouls. Varela received a yellow card in the first half.
Evergreen will play at Pacific Lutheran University on Friday, Sept. 13. Game time in Tacoma, Washington, is set for 6 p.m. PDT.
