OLYMPIA, Wash. -- College of Idaho, ranked #15 in the NAIA Women's Volleyball Poll, defeated The Evergreen State College 3-0 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference match on Friday, Oct. 10 at the Costantino Recreation Center. The Yotes won 25-11, 25-9, 25-18.
C of I improved to 12-6 overall, 6-5 in the CCC. The Geoducks fell to 1-14 on the season, 1-10 in the CCC. Eleven of Evergreen's losses have been to opponents that were ranked or received votes in the NAIA Poll at the time they played the Geoducks.
On Friday, the Yotes were led by Abigail Flerchinger with eight kills, as she earned a .538 hitting percentage. Cierra Bohrn followed with six kills, while Brooke Garman and Mia Hutchinson each added five kills. Shaynee McWilliams provided C of I with 22 assists, and Keylee Wilson earned eight digs. The Yotes registered 11 service aces.
Evergreen was topped by
Zofia Formella (So., MB) with four kills and made three digs.
Sophia Scroggins (Jr., OPP/MB) added three kills and three digs.
Jayden Vaimaona (Jr., S) supplied the Geoducks with eight assists.
Rosario Olvera (Fr., DS)Â contributed five digs, while Vaimaona and
Sue Losey (Fr., S/RS) each tacked on four digs.
Both teams had good blocking totals. College of Idaho ended the match with 9.5 team total blocks, while Evergreen had 8.0 team total blocks.
The Yotes surged out to an 11-2 advantage in the first set on the strength of three kills by Flerchinger. A service error by C of I ended the run, but the Yotes recovered with four unanswered points for a 15-3 lead. Evergreen reduced the margin to 18-9 on a service ace by Formella. C of I won the set 25-11.
College of Idaho also began the second set with a run, as the Yotes grabbed an 8-2 lead. The Geoducks pulled within 9-6 following a 3-0 run on kills from Scroggins and
Bright Brubaker (So., OPP), plus a service ace by Scroggins. C of I responded with a 6-0 run, ending with a combination block by Cora Young and Shaynee McWilliams, for a 15-6 edge. Evergreen scored next on a combo block from
Maya Ware (Fr., MB/OPP) and Brubaker, but the Yotes ended the set be winning 10 of the next 12 rallies.
In the third set, Evergreen held a 4-3 lead on a kill by Formella. A bit later, the Geoducks gained a 9-8 advantage on a combo block by Ware and
Mikayla Kelly (Grad., MB). C of I took control with a 9-0 run for a 17-9 lead. Even so, the Geoducks moved within 19-15 on a kill by Vaimaona, and also pulled within four points at 20-16 and 22-18, before the Yotes won the final three points of the match.
Evergreen will remain at home to take on Eastern Oregon University on Saturday, Oct. 11. Game time is set for 4 p.m. PDT. The Mountaineers are ranked #1 in the NAIA Women's Volleyball Poll.
