OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College battled Oregon Tech in a Cascade Collegiate College match on Friday, Oct. 3, but the Owls won 3-0 at the Costantino Recreation Center.
Zofia Formella (So., MB) earned eight kills and a .400 hitting percentage for the Geoducks, while two Evergreen players registered double-doubles. Oregon Tech prevailed 25-20, 25-19, 25-16.
Sophia Scroggins (Jr., OPP/MB) of Evergreen finished with 10 kills and 10 digs.
Sue Losey (Fr., S/DS) accumulated 12 assists and a team-high 13 digs. Scroggins and Formella combined to lead the offensive chart.
Following Losey on the Geoducks' digs list was
Amaialyne Cepeda (Sr., DS/L), who was credited with 12 digs.
Jayden Vaimaona (Jr., S) supplied 11 assists on offense.
Mikayla Kelly (Grad., MB) contributed three block assists on defense.
Oregon Tech improved to 9-7 overall, 3-6 in the CCC. The Geoducks dropped to 1-12 on the season, 1-8 in the CCC.
Alexa Gugliotta topped a balanced attack for OIT with six kills and a .417 hitting percentage. Savanna Sterck, Steffini Goss, and Tiffini Goss provided five kills apiece. The Owls received four kills each from Aleksen Thayer, Willow Jacobson, and Lex Boccia. Also for Oregon Tech, Lucy Boyd amassed 14 assists, and Taryn Ramsay added 12 assists. Abigail Sorensen ended the match with 16 digs, while Thayer earned four total blocks.
Evergreen trailed by a slim 6-4 margin in the first set following a kill by Kelly. Oregon Tech answered with a 5-0 run for an 11-6 lead. The Owls eventually held a 16-10 advantage, but Evergreen scored six of the next seven points to pull within 17-16 on an attacking error by the Owls. The Geoducks also trailed by a single point at 19-18 on a kill from Scroggins, before OIT ended the set with a 6-2 surge.
The second set was tied at 7-7 after four consecutive points for the Geoducks. OIT tallied the next five points, ending with a service ace by Ramsay, for a 12-7 lead. A bit later, Evergreen cut the margin to 19-15 on a back row kill by Scroggin. Soon a cross-court kill by Scroggins moved the Geoducks as close as 21-18. Oregon Tech took the set 25-19.
OIT opened the third set with a 10-4 surge. The Geoducks trailed 15-5 before a 6-1 outburst by Evergreen reduced the deficit to 16-11. The run included two kills from Scroggins and a service ace from Vaimaona. The Owls won four consecutive rallies as their margin grew to 20-11 following an ace by Alison Miller. OIT won the set 25-16.
The Geoducks will take on Southern Oregon University in another CCC match at the Costantino Recreation Center on Saturday, Oct. 4. Action will begin at 4 p.m. PDT.
