Geoducks Fall to Southern Oregon Raiders in Volleyball

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College fell to Southern Oregon University in a Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball match 3-0 on Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Costantino Recreation Center. The Raiders downed the Geoducks, 25-15, 25-11, 25-11.

Sophia Scroggins (Jr., OPP/.MB) and Zofia Formella (So., MB) each registered five kills for Evergreen. Jayden Vaimaona (Jr., S) provided the Geoducks with eight assists and five digs. Amaialyne Cepeda (Sr., DS/L) led Evergreen with six digs. Formella tacked on two service aces.

Maya Watters led the Raiders with 15 kills. Friley Curtiss accumulated 11 kills and a .600 hitting percentage. Annie Hite supplied 20 assists and four service aces, while Mia Jaeger was credited with 17 assists. Tais Vega achieved 12 digs and Andressa Ribeiro Soares added 11 digs. Tessa Zimmerman had three block assists. 

Southern Oregon moved to 7-10 overall, 4-6 in the CCC. Evergreen ended the match at 1-13 overall, 1-9 in the CCC.

One kill each by Watters and Curtiss helped SOU take a 4-0 lead at the start of the match. Evergreen pulled within 5-4 on a service ace by Joy Miyazawa and later trailed by a slim 9-7 score. The Raiders earned the next four points, only to have Evergreen counter with a 4-0 run of its own, cutting SOU's advantage to 13-11. The Raiders extended the lead to 20-11 and won the opening set 25-15.

SOU held a 5-1 margin in the second set following a service ace by Hite. Evergreen tied the score at 7-7 on an ace by Formella and also claimed a tie at 8-8 after a kill by Scroggins. The Raiders scored next on a kill from Ribeiro Soares, starting a 5-1 surge for a 14-9 lead. After the Geoducks added a point, the Raiders went on a 11-1 run to close out the set.

Evergreen trailed the Raiders 9-3 in the third set following a kill by Zimmerman. The Geoducks scored next on a kill by Formella, before SOU grabbed a 13-4 advantage. The Raiders completed the match with a 25-11 win.

The Geoducks will host the College of Idaho on Friday, Oct. 10. Match time at the Costantino Recreation Center is scheduled for 6 p.m. PDT.
