Scroggins Provides 11 Kills for Geoducks against SOU

ASHLAND, Ore. -- Sophia Scroggins (Jr., OPP/MB) earned 11 kills for the Geoducks, but The Evergreen State College fell to Southern Oregon University 3-0 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball match on Friday, Oct. 31 at Litha Motors Pavilion. Southern Oregon won 25-7, 25-10, 25-19. Friley Curtiss led SOU with eight kills.

The Raiders upped their season record to 12-12 with a 9-8 record in the CCC. Evergreen moved to 1-20 overall, 1-16 in the CCC.

In addition to contributing 11 kills for Evergreen, Scroggins provided four digs, one service ace, and one block assist. Zofia Formella (So., MB) was credited with three kills, while Jaci Yamada (Fr., DS) registered nine digs. Jayden Vaimaona (Jr., S) supplied the Geoducks with nine assists.

Curtiss led a balanced attack for SOU, as seven Raiders produced at least two kills. The eight kills for Curtiss were followed by six kills from Maya Watters and five kills by Andressa Ribeiro Soares. Tais Vega totaled 14 digs for the Raiders, while Annie Hite accumulated eight digs. Hite also finished with 13 assists. Amanda Moffat tacked on eight assists.

In each of the first two sets, the Raiders surged out to a big lead. During the opening set, Southern Oregon led 10-1 after 11 rallies. In the second set, the Raiders also grabbed a 10-1 lead.

Evergreen and SOU each tallied eight of the next 16 points in the second set, but the Raiders held an 18-9 lead. Southern Oregon won 25-10.

The Geoducks were in front 2-1 in the third set on a combo block by Ashley Walker Campbell (Sr., OPP) and Formella, plus a kill by Scroggins. Evergreen scored the next point, but SOU countered with a 5-0 run for a 6-3 lead. Neither team led by more than three points for most of the set. The Raiders led 14-11, but Evergreen moved in front 15-14 on a combo block from Scroggins and Formella. 

A bit later, Southern Oregon took a 17-15 lead on a kill by Curtiss. The Geoducks were within two points two more times at 18-16 and 19-17. SOU responded with a 3-0 run fro a 22-17 edge on its way to a 25-19 win.

Evergreen will play at Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls, Oregon, on Saturday, Nov. 1. Match time is scheduled for 4 p.m. PDT.
