Scroggins Contributes 10 Kills and 10 Digs versus Northwest

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Sophia Scroggins (Jr., OPP/MB) from The Evergreen State College registered10 kills and 10 digs, but the Geoducks lost to Northwest University 3-0 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball match on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at the Costantino Recreation Center. Northwest prevailed 25-20, 25-18, 25-12.

Evergreen's attack finished with three players at six or more kills for the match. The 10 kills by Scroggins led the way, while Zofia Formella (So., MB) provided the Geoducks with seven kills and Ashley Walker Campbell (Sr., OPP) added six kills.

Scroggins' 10 digs were followed by three Geoducks with eight digs. They were Jaci Yamada (Fr., DS), Jayden Vaimaona (Jr. S), and Sue Losey (Fr., S/RS. Losey also supplied 16 assists, while Vaimaona was credited with nine assists. 

Chloe Kennedy earned nine kills with no errors and a .818 hitting percentage for NU. Aubree Dees and Delaney Sparks each contributed seven kills for the Eagles. Setter Morgan Harter produced 25 assists and also made 11 digs. Dees tacked on a match-high 13 digs. Hailey Edwards led all players with three service aces. 

Northwest University, ranked #21 in the NAIA Women's Volleyball Poll, upped its record to 14-11 overall, 8-11 in the CCC. Evergreen fell to 1-22 overall, 1-18 in the CCC. The Eagles amassed 34 kills, while the Geoducks achieved 32 kills. NU also held a slim 49-47 lead in digs.

The Eagles gained an edge in serving with 10 aces and just three serving errors. Evergreen recorded six service aces and nine serving errors. 

Evergreen took a 7-6 lead in the first set on a service ace by Losey. The Eagles scored the next three points to grab a 9-7 edge. A kill by Mikayla Kelly (Grad., MB) reduced the margin to a single point, but NU countered with a 6-0 run for a 15-8 advantage. The Geoducks battled to within 15-11 after a kill by Kelly and two consecutive kills by Formella. 

NU built a 19-12 advantage before Evergreen tallied five consecutive points to reduce the lead to 19-17. The last two points of the run were earned on a combo block by Losey and Formella, followed by a service ace from Amaialyne Cepeda (Sr., DS/L). The Geoducks soon moved within a single point at 20-19 on an attacking error by the Eagles. NU earned five of the next six points, starting with a 3-0 run, to win the set 25-20.

In the second set, Northwest University surged out to a 9-2 lead, including three kills by Kaitlyn Mickle. The Eagles held a 14-5 margin at the end of a 5-0 run that featured three kills from Kennedy. Evergreen got as close as 22-17 following three consecutive kills by Walker Campbell before NU won the set 25-18.

The Eagles opened the third set with a 9-1 run and kept a comfortable lead for the remainder of the set. Evergreen's kill leaders during the set were Scroggins with three kills and Formella with two kills.

Evergreen will close out the season by hosting Warner Pacific University on Friday, Nov. 7 at the CRC. Match time is set for 6 p.m. PST. After the match, Evergreen will honor the team's seniors, Cepeda and Walker Campbell.
