Evergreen Celebrates 45 Years of Athletics

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College added intercollegiate athletics on March 8, 1979 in a vote by the Board of Trustees. Evergreen began competing in 1979-80 in men's and women's soccer and men's and women's swimming. Forty-five years later, the 2024-25 athletic year began at Evergreen.

We are celebrating Evergreen's 45 years in intercollegiate athletics during March and April of 2025. As part of the celebration, we're looking for stories and memories from Geoducks who have participated in any sport throughout the 45-year history of Evergreen Athletics.

Please include your story in comments to the Evergreen Seeks Memories post at Geoduck Athletics on Facebook. Encourage other Geoducks to share their stories, too.

We're also raising funds to help pay for the Athletics Banquet at the end of the 2024-25 academic year. Your support is greatly appreciated. Please donate at the Athletics Banquet donation page.

Over the years, Evergreen has been competitive in a variety of sports. The Geoducks have won three NAIA individual championships:  Zeb Hoffman in the men's hammer throw in outdoor track and field in 2016, Alauna Carstens in the NAIA Marathon in December of 2024, and Izabelle Trefts in the 3,000-meter race walk in indoor track and field in February of 2025.

Now with 45 years of history, Evergreen has a Recreation and Athletics Hall of Fame. Recent inductees include men's track and field athlete Anthony Johnson ('16), women's cross country and track and field athlete Emily Uhlig ('08), and the 2004 men's soccer team in the fall of 2024, plus Evergreen alum and former Head Men's Soccer Coach John Purtteman ('84) and the 2002 men's basketball team in 2022.
