ASHLAND, Ore. --
Izzy Widener (So., F) scored for The Evergreen State College early in the second half to pull within a goal of Southern Oregon University, but the Raiders added an insurance goal in the final 12 minutes to defeat the Geoducks 3-1 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference opener for both teams on Friday, Sept. 19. SOU advanced its record to 4-1 on the season, 1-0 in the CCC. Evergreen fell to 0-4 overall, 0-1 in the CCC.
The Raiders took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Brooklyn Hays at 14:14. Frida Vargas registered an assist on the play. Vargas assisted on all three Southern Oregon goals.
Emily Hyde put in a goal for SOU just over 10 minutes later at 24:55. The Raiders remained in front 2-0 at halftime on the strength of an 11-0 advantage in total shots.
The Geoducks produced the first goal of the second half on Widener's shot at 50:40. She was assisted by
Emma Stock (Grad., D), as Evergreen cut Southern Oregon's lead to 2-1. Stock won the ball near midfield and passed to Widener near the left sideline. Widener started to approach the attacking third, then shot from 28 yards into the top of the net.
SOU tacked on its third goal at 78:17 on a shot by Tori Lasch for a two-goal lead. Lasch made a move just inside the 18-yard box and shot the ball low and past goalkeeper
Katie Gresham (Jr.).
Gresham finished with nine saves while playing the final 45 minutes for Evergreen. Starting goalie
Anna Varela (Sr.) earned four saves for the Geoducks in the first half. For SOU, Brittany Standley did not make a save during the first half, while Issy Rutherford registered one save in the second half.
The Raiders attained a 28-6 advantage in total shots and a 16-2 edge in shots on target. Southern Oregon held a 10-1 lead in corner kicks.
Hyde of SOU led all players with four total shots. Widener topped the Geoducks with three total shots.
Evergreen will be back in action at Oregon Tech on Saturday, Sept. 20. The CCC game is set to begin at 12 p.m. PDT in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
