OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College was led by
Sophia Scroggins (Jr., OPP/MB) with seven kills and six digs against Walla Walla University on Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Costantino Recreation Center, but the Wolves downed the Geoducks 3-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Yaimaris Garcia of Walla Walla led all players with 13 kills and also recorded eight assists.
The Wolves, who received votes in this week's NAIA Women's Volleyball Poll, improved to 6-3 overall, 4-2 in the CCC. Evergreen moved to 0-10 on the season, 0-6 in the CCC. Nine of Evergreen's 10 opponents were nationally ranked or received votes in the NAIA Poll when they played the Geoducks.
Scroggins was followed on the Evergreen attacking chart by
Ashley Walker Campbell (Sr., OPP) with five kills and by
Zofia Formella (So., MB) with four kills.
Jayden Vaimaona (Jr., S) provided the Geoducks with 10 assists, while
Sue Losey (Fr., S/RS) finished with eight assists and a team-high seven digs.
Amaialyne Cepeda (Sr., DS/L) contributed six digs. Formella earned three block assists.
Evergreen achieved 7.0 team total blocks on 12 block assists, plus a solo block by Scroggins. The Wolves did not register a block during the match.
In addition to Garcia, key offensive threats for Walla Walla were Sahara Browning, who accumulated nine kills, and Paula Flores, who was credited with eight kills. Olivia Cheek supplied 17 assists, while Adree Selley amassed 12 digs. Cheek, Garcia, and Michaela Porter each registered four of Walla Walla's 15 service aces.
The teams were tied four times during the first 22 rallies, including 8-8 following a service ace for Evergreen by Losey and 11-11 on a kill by Flores for the Wolves. Walla Walla broke the tie with four additional points for a 15-11 lead after Porter earned an ace. Evergreen moved within 15-13 on an ace by Cepeda, but the Wolves countered with a 5-0 run. WWU took the set 25-16.
Evergreen held a 6-5 lead in the second set on a kill by Walker Campbell and owned an 8-6 advantage following a serving error by the Wolves. Walla Walla claimed eight of the next nine points for a 14-9 lead. The Geoducks answered with a 4-1 run as a kill from Walker Campbell cut the margin to 15-13. Evergreen trailed 18-14 before the Wolves used a 7-1 run to win the set.
In the third set, the Geoducks owned a 5-4 lead. The Wolves tallied the next seven points, including three kills by Browning to grab an 11-5 advantage. Back-to-back kill produced by Scroggins pulled Evergreen within 11-7. The Wolves followed with a 6-0 run and went on to a 25-13 victory.
The Geoducks will play at Northwest University on Tuesday, Sept. 23. Match time in Kirkland, Washington, is set for 6 p.m. PDT.
