Eagles Defeat Geoducks 3-0 in CCC Volleyball Match

KIRKLAND, Wash. -- Northwest University downed The Evergreen State College in a Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball match 3-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Kristi Brodin Pavilion. The Eagles won 25-11, 25-9, 25-13, as Kaitlyn Mickle provided Northwest with nine kills.

Northwest University improved to 9-4 on the season, 3-4 in the CCC. The Eagles received votes in this week's NAIA Women's Volleyball Poll. Evergreen fell to 0-11 overall, including 0-7 in the CCC. Ten of Evergreen's 11 opponents were ranked or received votes in the NAIA Poll at the time they played the Geoducks.

The Geoducks earned 5.0 team total blocks. Mikayla Kelly (Grad., MB) led the way with three block assists, while Zofia Formella (So., MB) and Ashley Walker Campbell (Sr., OPP) each added two block assists. Walker Campbell also supplied Evergreen with four kills. Jayden Vaimaona (Jr, S) was credited with four assists, and Amaialyne Cepeda (Sr., DS/L) earned five digs. Sophia Scroggins (Jr., OPP/MB) and Jaci Yamada (Fr., DS) each contributed five digs. Scroggins also provided two service aces.

Mickle's nine kills for NU were followed by seven kills from Aubree Dees. Delaney Sparks accumulated five kills. Morgan Harter registered 23 assists. Sydney Fabor connected on four service aces. Ellie Van Berkum and Dees both made eight digs.

The Eagles surged out to an early lead by scoring the first eight points of the match. The Geoducks pulled within 9-3 on a kill by Walker Campbell. Later, Evergreen trailed 13-7 following a service error by the Eagles. NU answered with a 10-1 run, including two service aces by Dees and three kills by Mickle, for a 23-8 advantage. The Eagles took the set 25-11.

Northwest University gained a 9-1 lead to open the second set. Evergreen rallied with a 6-1 run to cut the margin to 10-7. The run featured an ace by Scroggins and two combination blocks by the Geoducks. Northwest registered the next 13 points to increase its advantage to 23-7.

Evergreen started strong in the third set with a 6-2 edge. The Eagles responded with 10 points in a row for a 12-6 lead. Four NU players each recorded one kill during the run. The Eagles remained in front and won the set 25-13 to end the match.

The Geoducks are set to play at Warner Pacific University on Saturday, Sept. 27. Match time at C.C. Perry Gym in Portland, Oregon, will be at 4 p.m. PDT.
