Scroggins Earns Double-Double in 3-2 Win at Warner Pacific

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Sophia Scroggins (Jr., OPP/MB) registered a double-double with 11 kills and 17 digs for The Evergreen State College, and Ashley Walker Campbell (Sr., OPP) added 12 kills, as the Geoducks outlasted Warner Pacific University, 3-2, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball match on Saturday, Sept. 27 at C.C. Perry Gymnasium. Amaialyne Cepeda (Sr., DS/L) earned 23 digs and Jayden Vaimaona (Jr., S) added 23 assists for Evergreen.

The Geoducks won the first two sets, lost the next to sets, then won the fifth set for a 25-21, 25-21, 16-25, 20-25, 15-10 victory. Evergreen ended the match at 1-11 overall, 1-7 in the CCC. The Knights fell to 0-9 on the season, 0-8 in the CCC.

Following Walker Campbell and Scroggins on Evergreen's offensive chart were Zofia Formella (So., MB) and Sue Losey (Fr., S/RS), each with seven kills. Mikayla Kelly (Grad., MB) provided four kills and a .300 hitting percentage. Joining Cepeda and Scroggins with double-digit digs were Jaci Yamada (Sr., DS/L) with 16 and Losey with 11. Losey's all-around effort also included 16 assists and one block assist.

Tayah-Anne Toa paced the Knights with 12 kills. JayNay Jardine tacked on eight kills. Pa'oakalani Payne-Kaeo contributed 18 assists and 13 digs, while Angel Camagay was credited with match-high 24 digs. Audrey Histed finished with 13 assists for WPU.

After Warner Pacific tied the match at 2-2, Evergreen began the fifth set with a 4-0 run. The run ended with a kill by Losey and a service ace by Scroggins. Toa followed with a kill for WPU, but Walker Campbell added a kill to give the Geoducks a 5-1 lead. The Knights cut the margin to 5-3 before Evergreen went on a 5-2 surge, including one kill by Walker Campbell and two kills from Scroggins, to grab a 10-5 advantage. 

WPU reduced Evergreen's lead to 11-8 and also trailed by just three points at 12-9 after a kill by Naomi Johnson. A kill by Formella and an attacking error by the Knights gave Evergreen a 14-9 advantage. Two rallies later, Evergreen won the set and the match at 15-10 on an attacking miscue by Warner Pacific.

The first set was tied eight times in the opening 24 rallies, including a 12-12 deadlock. Evergreen tallied the next three points, ending with a service ace by Cepeda. After WPU pulled within 15-13, the Geoducks went on a 5-2 run for a 20-15 advantage following a kill by Scroggins. The Knights moved as close as 21-18 and 24-21, but a kill by Bright Brubaker (So., OPP/S) ended the set.

Evergreen zoomed out to a 12-7 lead in the second set on the strength of three kills by Walker Campbell and two kills by Scroggins. Warner Pacific eventually achieved a 16-16 tie with a kill by Jardine. The Geoducks regained control with a 5-0 run for a 21-16 edge. As in the first set, WPU reduced the lead to 24-21. A serving error by Histed provided Evergreen with the winning point in the set.

Warner Pacific controlled much of the third set with leads of 6-2, 10-6, and 15-10. Later, the Knights held an 18-13 margin and closed out the set with a 7-3 run.

The Knights opened the fourth set with a 12-5 surge. WPU also owned a 20-9 lead before the Geoducks put together an 11-3 run, ending with a kill by Scroggins, to cut the margin to 23-20. The Knights won the set 25-20 after Johnson recorded a kill and the Geoducks had an attacking error.

Evergreen will take on Oregon Tech on Friday, Oct. 3 in the Costantino Recreation Center. Match time in Olympia, Washington, is set for 6 p.m. PDT.
