CALDWELL, Idaho --
Amaialyne Cepeda (Sr., DS/L) from The Evergreen State College earned 10 kills, but 10th-ranked College of Idaho defeated the Geoducks 3-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action on Saturday, Sept. 6. The Yotes were led by Mia Hutchinson with 12 kills.
College of Idaho won 25-7, 25-17, 25-10, as the NAIA nationally-ranked Yotes improved to 7-2 on the season, 1-1 in the CCC. Evergreen fell to 0-6 overall, 0-2 in the CCC. All six of Evergreen's six losses have been to teams ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Women's Volleyball Poll at the time of the match.
While Cepeda provided Evergreen with 10 digs, teammate
Ashley Walker Campbell (Sr., OPP) was credited with four kills and seven digs.
Zofia Formella (So., MB) also achieved for kills for the Geoducks.
Jayden Vaimaona (Jr., S) supplied teammates with eight assists.
Sophia Scroggins (Jr., OPP/MB) finished with two blocks.
Hutchinson was followed on the C of I offensive chart by Abigail Flerchinger with nine kills and Cierra Bohrn with seven kills. Shaynee McWilliams registered 19 assists for the Yotes. Kadence Boyd amassed nine digs.
College of Idaho recorded a 12-2 edge in service aces, led by Liza Montalbo with four. Cepeda and Vaimaona each contributed one service ace for the Geoducks.
The first set was tied at 4-4 after eight rallies, including one kill each for Evergreen by Walker Campbell and Formella. C of I surged ahead with six consecutive points for a 10-4 lead following a kill by Flerchinger. A bit later, the Yotes led 14-7 before going on an 11-0 run to win the set.
In the second set, the team were tied at 5-5 after Scroggins and
Mikayla Kelly (Grad., MB) combined on a block. Evergreen trailed 8-5 but pulled within 8-7 two rallies later on a service ace by Cepeda. The Geoducks trailed by small margins at 11-9 and 12-10. C of I answered with a 5-0 run, beginning and ending with kills by Hutchinson, for a 17-10 advantage. Evergreen moved as close as 21-16 on another combo block by Scroggins and Kelly, but C of I won the set 25-17.
The Yotes grabbed a 7-0 lead in the third set. Evergreen tallied the next four points, including one kill each by Scroggins and
Bright Brubaker (So., OPP). The Geoducks eventually reduced the margin to 13-10 after back-to-back attacking errors by C of I. The Yotes ended the match with a 12-0 run.
Evergreen will take on Bushnell University in Eugene, Oregon on Friday, Sept. 12. Match time at the Morse Center is set for 6 p.m. PDT.
