OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Senior outside hitter
Sophia Scroggins from The Evergreen State College registered eight kills against NAIA #4-ranked Corban University on Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Costantino Recreation Center. Greta Van Gemert led the Warriors with 10 kills. Corban defeated the Geoducks, 3-0, winning 25-15, 25-12, 25-11.
The Warriors advanced their record to 10-3 overall, 3-1 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Evergreen ended the match at 1-7 on the season, 0-4 in the CCC.
Following Scroggins' eight kills on Evergreen's offensive chart was
Annalise Orlowski (Fr., MB) with five kills.
Jayden Vaimaona (Sr., S) supplied the Geoducks with 12 assists, while
Riley Mangan (Jr., S) added nine assists.
Jaci Yamada (So., DS/L) contributed nine digs. Vaimaona achieved five digs for the Geoducks.
Van Gemert's 10 kills paced a balanced attack for Corban as Lauryn Copeland and Emma Bischoff each tacked on nine kills. Nadeiah Howard was credited with 21 assists for the Warriors, while Kawnea Crowell earned 13 assists. Dani Street led the Warriors with nine digs, and Howard provided seven digs. Jenna Konzelman finished with four block assists. Madison Hernandez recorded four service aces.
In the first set, Evergreen took a 4-2 lead on a kill by
Bright Brubaker (Jr., OPP). The teams were tied three times before Corban went on a 4-1 run to claim a 10-7 advantage following a service ace by Howard. Evergreen scored next on another kill from Brubaker, but the Warriors answered by claiming three of the next four points for a 13-9 edge.
Zofia Formella (Jr., MB/OH) cut the margin to 13-10 with a kill for the Geoducks. The Warriors added a 3-0 run and gradually pulled away to win the set 25-15.
Corban built an 8-2 margin during the first 10 rallies of the second set. Kendra Bittle earned two service aces during the run. The Geoducks battled to within 9-5 on a kill by Orlowski. The Warriors registered the next six points for a 15-5 lead. A 3-0 run by the Geoducks reduced the deficit to 15-8 before Corban went on a 10-4 run to end the set.
The Warriors tallied the first four points of the third set. Despite Evergreen receiving three kills from Scroggins during the set, Corban gradually pulled away to secure the overall match victory.
Evergreen will play a CCC match at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho on Friday, Sept. 18. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m. PDT.
