KIRKLAND, Wash. -- Senior outside hitter
Sophia Scroggins registered eight kills and 10 digs for The Evergreen State College at Northwest University on Wednesday, Sept. 23, but the Geoducks were defeated by the Eagles 3-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Northwest won 25-13, 25-14, 25-20.
Scroggins also contributed a service ace and one block assist. She topped Evergreen's offensive chart with her eight kills, while Analise Orlowski (Jr., S/DS),
Zofia Formella (Jr., MB/OH), and
Bright Brubaker (Jr., OPP) each supplied three kills. Setters
Riley Mangan (Jr.) and
Jayden Vaimaona (Sr.) both finished with eight assists for the Geoducks. Mangan also achieved seven digs. Orlowski and Brubaker tied for the team lead with three block assists.
Jaelyn Moeva and Haylee Koetje both accumulated nine kills for Northwest. Chloe Kennedy tacked on seven kills, while Teagan Schroeder was credited with six kills and a .556 hitting percentage with just one attacking error. Katelyn Bogetti provided the Eagles with 32 assists. Sydney Faber led all players with 16 digs. Koetje added 11 digs and topped the NU lineup with five service aces, while Bogetti recorded four aces.
The Eagles earned 35 kills while the Geoducks amassed 20 kills. Evergreen claimed a 5.0 to 1.0 advantage in team total blocks.
Northwest upped its record to 5-11 on the season and moved to 1-6 in the CCC. Evergreen fell to 1-10 overall, 0-7 in the CCC.
Evergreen led 4-3 in the first set after a combo block by Brubaker and Orlowski. The Geoducks also held an 8-6 margin following a kill by Scroggins. The Eagles tallied the next five points, including two service aces by Koetje, to grab an 11-8 lead. Evergreen scored next, but a 5-0 run by NU gave the Eagles a 16-9 advantage on their way to a 25-13 win.
The second set opened with seven ties on the way to an 8-8 deadlock after 16 rallies. Scroggins provided two of Evergreen's first eight points on kills. A kill by Moeva broke the tie and started a 7-2 run as the Eagles surged out to a 15-10 lead. The Geoducks recorded two of the next three points to cut the margin to 16-12. Northwest took the set 25-14.
In the third set, the Geoducks overcame a 5-2 deficit to eventually tie the score at 14-14. The 12-9 run by Evergreen featured four kills and four blocks by the Geoducks, plus a service ace by Scroggins. An attacking error by Evergreen and a kill from Trinity Godina lifted NU into a 16-14 advantage, but the Geoducks stayed close and later tied the score at 19-19. The Eagles closed out the match with a 6-1 run.
Evergreen will host Warner Pacific University at the Costantino Recreation Center on Saturday, Sept. 26. Match time is set for 4 p.m. PDT.
