OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Evergreen State College pounded 36 kills and earned a .333 team hitting percentage, as the Geoducks swept Warner Pacific University 3-0 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball match on Friday, Sept. 26 at the Costantino Recreation Center.
Sophia Scroggins (Sr. OH) led Evergreen with nine kills and
Annalise Orlowski (Fr., MB) added eight kills. The Geoducks won 25-11, 25-16, 25-13.
Evergreen upped its record to 2-10 overall, 1-7 in the CCC. WPU fell to 0-9 overall, 0-8 in the CCC.
Scroggins and Orlowski combined for a total of 17 kills. Makayla Kelly (Grad., MB/OPP) and
Bright Brubaker (Jr., OPP) each tacked on five kills for Evergreen. Scroggins hit .400 with only one attacking error.
Zofia Formella (Jr., MB/OH) provided four kills with no attacking errors for a .500 hitting percentage.
Jayden Vaimaona (Sr., S) led the Geoducks with 20 assists and four service aces.
Riley Mangan (Jr., S/DS) supplied 10 assists, while Scroggins added three service aces.
Formella was credited with nine digs, and Vaimaona registered eight digs.
Jaci Yamada (So., DS/L) amassed seven digs and produced two service aces, while
Paron Holmes (Jr., DS/L) earned six digs and two service aces.
Tayah-Anne Toa paced Warner Pacific with six kills. Amor Rapoza achieved four kills. Daisci Burrows ended the match with 13 assists for the Knights. Maya Moreno topped WPU with nine digs, while Rapoza made six digs.
Evergreen scored the first three points of the match on its way to an 8-1 lead in the first set. The Geoducks led 10-4 after 14 rallies, then added seven consecutive points for a 17-4 margin. The 7-0 run included a service ace by Scroggins and one kill each from Kelly, Vaimaona and Orlowski. WPU countered with a 4-0 run, but Evergreen answered with an 8-3 surge to win the set 25-11.
The Geoducks held a 4-1 lead in the second set before the Knights tied the score at 5-5. A bit later, the Geoducks held a 10-6 advantage following a kill by Orlowski. The Knight pulled within 10-8 and 11-9, but Evergreen responded by scoring four of the next five points to grab a 15-10 edge. WPU cut the margin to 17-14, and then Evergreen surged out to a 22-14 lead with a 5-0 run that featured two service aces from Scroggins. The Geoducks took the set 25-16.
In the third set, Evergreen was in front 12-10 following a kill by Jose Schultz for Warner Pacific. The Geoducks took control by scoring the next eight points for a 20-10 lead. The Knights tallied two points in a row on kills by Schultz and Toa before Evergreen closed the match with a 5-1 run.
Evergreen will play at Oregon Tech on Friday, Oct. 2 in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Match time is set for 7 p.m. PDT.
