OLYMPIA, Wash. --
Sophia Scroggins (Sr., OH) and
Bright Brubaker (Jr., OPP) each provided seven kills for The Evergreen State College against NAIA #9 College of Idaho in a 3-0 loss to the Yotes at the Costantino Recreation Center on Saturday, Sept. 5. College of Idaho won 25-6, 25-12, 25-21 to improve to 9-0 on the season, 2-0 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Evergreen dropped to 1-5 overall, 0-2 in the CCC.
For the Geoducks, Scroggins and
Jaci Yamada (So., DS/L) were both credited with nine digs.
Jayden Vaimaona (Sr., S) finished with nine assists, while
Riley Mangan (Jr., S/DS) added eight assists.
A balanced attack for the Yotes included six kills each by Kelsy Stanger, Jessica Stires, and Addison McKarcher. Cora Young added five kills. C of I achieved a hitting percentage of .375 during the match. Avery Lewis led the Yotes with 14 digs and four service aces. Shaynee McWilliams supplied 11 assists, while Whitney Pierzga tacked on seven assists.
In the first set, the Geoducks trailed 4-1 before a kill by Scroggins and an attacking error by Alexa Wheeler reduced the Yotes' lead to 4-3. College of Idaho tallied the next five points for a 9-3 advantage and surged out to take the set 25-6.
The Yotes grabbed a 6-2 lead in the second set on a kill from Cora Young. Later, C of I held a 10-5 lead following a kill by McKarcher. Evergreen cut the margin to 10-8 with a service ace by Vaimaona and trailed by just two points at 11-9 after a kill by Brubaker. College of Idaho ended the set with a 14-3 run.
College of Idaho took a 6-1 lead in the third set on the strength of three service aces. Evergreen battled back with 12 of the next 14 points to claim a 13-8 advantage. The offensive surge by the Geoducks featured eight kills, including three kills by
Mikayla Kelly (Grad., MB/OPP) and two kills by Scroggins.
Evergreen went on to hold an 18-12 lead following two consecutive points on a kill from
Zofia Formella (Jr., MB/OH) and a service ace by
Paron Holmes (Jr., DS/L). The Yotes countered with a 7-1 run to move in front 19-18.
The Geoducks tied the score on a kill by Scroggins, but the Yotes responded with two of the next three points for a 22-20 edge following a kill by Kadance Jacobson. A kill registered by
Aubrie Coots (Fr., OPP) pulled Evergreen with 22-21. C of I won the set 25-21 by tallying three consecutive points on kills by Stires and McKarcher, plus a combo-block by McKarcher and Cierra Bohrn.
Up next for Evergreen is a CCC match against Bushnell University on Friday, Sept. 11 at the Costantino Recreation Center. Match time is set for 6 p.m. PDT.
