Eastern Oregon Hands Evergreen its First Loss in CCC Opener

Box Score LA GRANDE, Ore. - Defending champion Eastern Oregon scored the first 11 points Friday night in defeating the visiting Evergreen Geoducks, 75-50, in the Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball opener for both teams at Quinn Coliseum.

The loss was the first of the season against four wins for the Geoducks, while the host Mountaineers improved their season mark to 7-3.

Eastern Oregon got off to a great start with its 11-0 run to open the game. Evergreen didn't get on the scoreboard until LaNiecia Weatherspoon hit a layup about six minutes into the contest. The Geoducks twice pulled within eight points, the second at 18-10 on Brittany Gray's jumper with 9:26 left in the half. By the intermission, however, the Mountaineers had built a 36-15 lead.

Over the game's final 18 minutes Eastern Oregon never led by less than 20 points.

Weatherspoon, who entered the game as Evergreen's leading scorer at 18.8 points per game, basically finished at that average with a 19-point performance. She was 8-for-17 from the field, including 2-for-4 from beyond the arc, and was 1-for-2 at the foul line. She was the only Evergreen player to score in double figures. Sadee Jones had nine points while Gray finished with seven points and a team-best 10 rebounds.

The Geoducks shot just 33 percent (20-for-60) from the field but were 40 percent (4-for-10) from beyond the three-points line. The much taller Mountaineers enjoyed a 52-31 rebounding advantage.

Leading the way for the hsots was Madeline Laan with 18 points and Airashay Rogers with 11 points and 12 rebounds. The Mountaineers shot 47 percent (28-for-60) for the game.

Evergreen returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Saturday when it faces College of Idaho in Caldwell.
