Box Score SALEM, Ore. - In a hard-fought game played Saturday night between the third- and fourth-place teams in the Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball standings, Corban pulled away in the second half to defeat The Evergreen State College, 58-44, at C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
With the victory the host Warriors improved to 14-9 overall, and at 8-3 in conference play are now tied with nationally ranked Southern Oregon for second place. The visiting Geoducks are now 11-7 overall and at 5-6 in the conference dropped out of a fourth-place tie and into a fifth-place tie with College of Idaho.
Corban took the early lead and held it throughout a fiercely contested first half, that despite Evergreen tying the score on five different occasions.
Trailing 22-20 at the intermission, the Geoducks took their only lead of the game in the opening 70 seconds of the final period when
Sadee Jones scored four consecutive points to put her team on top, 24-22.
A jump shot by Tara Van Weerdhuizen followed by a three-point basket by Sadie Pilgeram put Corban back on top, and there it would stay for the remainder of the contest. Evergreen kept its deficit under five points through the first eight minutes of the half before the Warriors went on a decisive 11-0 run to open up a 44-30 advantage with 9:58 to play.
Evergreen cut the deficit to eight points on four occasions but got no closer.
Jones continued her outstanding play of late with her fifth consecutive double-double and her 11th of the season. The 5-6 senior post led her team with 14 points and 11 rebounds against Corban.
LaNiecia Weatherspoon added 11 points and
Karina Gee had eight for the Geoducks, who shot just 33 percent (19-for-57) from the field.
Van Weerdhuizen and Pilgeram both scored 12 points for the Warriors and Van Weerdhuizen, a 6-2 senior center, added 12 rebounds and three blocks. Corban shot 47 percent from the field in the second half and 39 percent (25-for-65) for the game and also owned a 46-36 rebound edge.
Evergreen is back in action at 5:30 p.m. next Saturday night when it takes on the Northwest University Eagles in Kirkland.
