Women's Hoops: Geoducks Seek to Ground Eagles

Sadee Jones recorded a double-double the last time the Geoducks played the Eagles.
COMING UP: The Evergreen State College continues its push for a spot in the Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball playoffs at 5:30 p.m. Saturday when it plays against the Northwest University Eagles in Kirkland.

ABOUT THE GEODUCKS: Evergreen is currently ranked in the NAIA Division II women's basketball Top 20 in three separate statistical categories. It is 18th in total defensive rebounds (35.2), 19th in rebound margin (+6.6) and 20th in scoring defense (58.4). Senior post Sadee Jones ranks ninth nationally in offensive rebounds per game (4.2) and 18th in total rebounds per game (9.8). Senior point guard Randi Boseman ranks 34th in assists per game (4.1). Jones currently ranks second in both scoring (14.4) and rebounding (9.8) average in the Cascade Conference. It should be noted that she is second in scoring to former teammate Brittany Gray's 15.9 points per game. Gray, whose eligibility ran out after 12 games, remains on the conference statistical report because she has played at least 50 percent of Evergreen's games, which is the conference standard. Ahead of Jones in the rebounding category is Corban's 6-2 senior center Tara Van Weerdhuizen, who averages 9.9 rebounds per game. Evergreen junior guard LaNiecia Weatherspoon ranks fifth in scoring with 13.7 points per game and is 13th in rebounding with 6.4 per contest. Other top Evergreen contributions come from Randi Boseman, fourth in assists per game (4.1), and junior post Uriah Thomas, among the leaders in field goal percentage (.471).

NOT TO GET AHEAD OF OURSELVES, BUT…: The Geoducks are in the conference postseason tournament chase with a 5-6 record, good for a fifth-place tie with College of Idaho. After Saturday's game at Northwest, Evergreen plays four of its final six games at CRC Gymnasium. Eight teams qualify for the tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 24, with the top four seeds hosting seeds five through eight. The two highest remaining seeds will host tournament semifinal games on Friday, Feb. 27, and the championship contest will be played at the highest remaining seed on Monday, March 2.

COMMON NAME, UNCOMMON GAME: Sadee Jones, by any measure, is in the midst of an outstanding senior season. Twice named the Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball player of the week, Jones leads the conference and ranks fourth nationally with 11 double-doubles (all points-rebounds) this season. She has double-doubles in five consecutive games and in seven of the last eight.

ABOUT THE EAGLES: The team's roster has been decimated by injuries, which has had much to do with Northwest falling to eighth place in the conference standings with a 3-8 record. The Eagles lost their third starter for the season last week when junior Charity Degman suffered a knee injury. Among the key players still in the lineup is 6-2 center Chanara Greene, who leads her team with 11.7 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game. Guard Jordan Asher averages 11.5 points and 3.5 assists and is second in the conference with 55 total three-point field goals. She is shooting an impressive 41 percent from beyond the arc. Guard Charmaine Bradford averages 3.8 assists per game. Prior to hosting Evergreen on Saturday night, the Eagles welcome non-league opponent New Hope Christian on Friday.

THE LAST TIME: When these teams played on Jan. 3, Brittany Gray and Sadee Jones both scored 18 points to lead the Geoducks to a 72-63 victory at CRC Gymnasium. LaNiecia Weatherspoon added 12 points and Jones had a strong game on the boards with 11. Evergreen shot 48 percent from the field (23-for-48), including an impressive 50 percent (10-for-20) from beyond the three-point line. Jordan Asher knocked down six three-pointers on her way to a game-high 19 points. Charmaine Bradford scored all 13 of her points in the second half.

EVERGREEN 64, NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN 52:  LaNiecia Weatherspoon, Sadee Jones and Uriah Thomas combined for 42 points last Friday night to lead Evergreen to a 64-52 conference win over the host Northwest Christian Beacons in Eugene, Ore. "We executed the game plan. We brought the energy that we needed to get it done," Evergreen head coach Jennifer Schooler said. "Everybody did their part and when that happens there is no question that we are successful."

CORBAN 58, EVERGREEN 44: The host Warriors moved into a second-place tie in the conference standings with a 58-44 victory over the Geoducks last Saturday in Salem, Ore. Sadee Jones led her the Geoducks with 14 points and 11 rebounds while LaNiecia Weatherspoon added 11 points. Tara Van Weerdhuizen tallied 12 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks for Corban.
