LaNiecia Weatherspoon scored 23 points and
Sadee Jones contributed 18 points and 12 rebounds Saturday night to lead The Evergreen State College past the Northwest Eagles, 62-51, in Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball action.
As a result of the victory the Geoducks improve to 12-7 overall and to 6-6 in the conference, which puts them alone in fourth place. Northwest is now 11-12 overall and 3-9 in the conference.
Weatherspoon, a junior guard, was perfect on all seven of her free throw attempts and the Geoducks were 27-for-31 as a team, good for 87 percent accuracy. She added four steals and five rebounds to her point total. Jones, recorded her sixth straight double-double and her 12th of the season. The senior post was 12-for-14 at the foul line and grabbed six rebounds on each end of the floor. She added three steals to her game totals.
Free throw shooting would prove to be crucial for the Geoducks, who never did warm up from the field, going 16-for-53, or 30 percent. A 41-32 rebound edge, with 19 offensive boards, also gave the visitors an edge in this contest.
Evergreen led 6-4 through the first five minutes when Kristen Frey hit a three-point shot to put Northwest on top for the remainder of the half. They led by as many as seven points in the opening 20 minutes before settling for a 28-24 advantage at the half.
Through the final half's first eight minutes the Eagles maintained a miniscule lead, generally between one to three points, until the Geoducks finally tied it at 37-37 on a free throw by Jones. Weatherspoon hit a three-pointer with 10:21 to play to start a run of 10 consecutive points, leading to a 49-41 margin with 8:14 on the clock. Weatherspoon scored eight points during the run, culminated by her layup and free throw.
The Geoducks would later lead by as much as 16 points before settling for the 11-point victory and a season sweep of the Eagles.
Charmaine Bradford scored 16 points and handed out five assists to lead the hosts.
Evergreen reutrns to conference action next weekend when it hosts Oregon Tech on Friday and Southern Oregon on Saturday.
