Box Score ASHLAND, Ore. –
Sadee Jones scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds Friday night but it wasn't enough to bring about an upset as No. 16-ranked Southern Oregon defeated The Evergreen State College,77-56, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball game played at Bob Riehm Arena.
The host Raiders improved to 14-2 overall and 5-2 in the conference, while the Geoducks, who saw their modest two-game winning streak come to an end, are now 8-5 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
After Southern Oregon scored the opening basket, Evergreen got a layup from
LaNiecia Weatherspoon and a jumper from
Uriah Thomas to take their only lead of the game. An 8-0 scoring run over the next 2 1/2 minutes gave the lead and the momentum back to the Raiders, who never again trailed.
Southern Oregon seemed on the verge of breaking the game open in the middle portion of the first half, taking a 23-10 lead on a three-point field goal and free throw by Bree Park about nine minutes into the period.
Despite having only seven players on the roster and facing the uptempo Raiders, the Geoducks refused to give in, cutting their deficit to five points, 40-35, when Thomas hit a jumper with about 1:40 left. Southern Oregon eventually took a 44-35 lead into the halftime break.
The Geoducks continued to stay within striking distance of the Raiders through the initial four minutes of the final period before the hosts finally gained a double-digit lead and played add-on after that.
A key element to Southern Oregon pulling away in the second half came from its defense, which limited the Geoducks to 27 percent shooting after they had connected on 43 percent of their attempts in the opening half. In addition, Evergreen strugged at the foul line, making just four of its 11 attempts.
The Geoducks held their own on the boards against the much taller and deeper Raiders, who won that battle, 49-41.
Weatherspoon joined Jones in double-figure scoring with 11 points and she added three steals.
Randi Boseman tallied nine points and six assists, and Thomas ended the game with eight points and eight rebounds.
Kristen Schoenherr led the Raiders with 15 points, Carly Meister added 12 and Courtney West contributed 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Geoducks return to conference action at 5:30 p.m. Saturday when they face Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls.
