Staveland Scores 22 as Geoducks Beat Multnomah

Lacey Morris
Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. - Jonelle Staveland scored 22 points and Lacey Morris added nine points and eight assists Friday night to lead The Evergreen State College to an 82-76 Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball victory at Jim Skagen Court.

Staveland was 6-for-8 from three-point range in leading the Geoducks (1-3 overall, 1-1 CCC) to the victory over the Lions (2-7, 0-2), who are newcomers to the conference.

The Geoducks trailed after the opening quarter, 21-19, but took the lead for good about 2 1/2 minutes into the second period when junior post Gabi Fenumiai made a steal and scored a layin. That made the score 25-24, and Evergreen eventually pulled ahead by 11 points on a three-point play by Morris before Sadie Jenks drilled a three-pointer for the Lions to bring the halftime score to 45-37 in favor of the Geoducks.

Evergreen maintained its double-digit lead through much of the third period, and in fact took a 60-49 advantage into the final quarter.

That's when things got a bit scary for the Geoducks. Trailing 64-54 with 8:08 to play after a three-pointer by Evergreen's Staveland, Multnomah scored 15 of the next 21 points to pull within 70-69 with 3:29 to play on a triple by Valerie Wakefield.

Sammi Williams replied with a three for the Geoducks, only to see Jenks hit another triple on the other end of the floor to keep it a one-point game with just under three minutes to play. Staveland again had a big answer with her final three-pointer of the game as the Geoducks rolled off eight consecutive points in a two-minute span to put the game away.

Staveland, who hit five three-pointers in Evergreen's conference-opening loss at Northwest on Tuesday, was 6-for-8 from long range on her way to the game-high 22 points. Uriah Thomas added 13 points and six rebounds, and Fenumiai added 10 points and six more rebounds. With eight assists in tonight's game, Morris now has 17 in two conference contests.

Evergreen shot an impressive 50 percent from the field (31-for-62), including 7-for-14 from beyond the arc.

Janks scored 18 points, all on three-pointers, Lacie Kamper and Wakefield both added 14, and Miranda Schmillen contributed 11 for the Lions. Kamper led all players with nine rebounds.

Multnomah shot 44 percent overall (28-for-64) and shot an outstanding 57 percent (13-for-23) from three-point range.

Evergreen is back in action at 5:30 p.m. Saturday when it faces Warner Pacific.
