Women's Hoops: Home Court Playoff Berth on the Line

Sadee Jones and the Geoducks are focused on weekend opponents College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon.
COMING UP: The Evergreen State College (15-8 overall, 9-7 CCC) hosts College of Idaho (8-17, 7-9) on Friday and Eastern Oregon (22-5, 14-2) on Saturday in Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball contests.

FOLLOW THE GEODUCKS: Fans unable to attend Evergreen home games can still follow their favorite team via live stats and pay-per-view video feed. Access both athttp://portal.stretchinternet.com/evergreen/. John Hammargren is the play-by-play announcer on the video stream.

ON THE CUSP OF HISTORY: With the aforementioned two regular season contests remaining on the schedule, the fourth-place Geoducks are on the cusp of hosting an opening-round conference postseason tournament game for the first time in program history. Prior to this year, Evergreen has played in seven CCC women's postseason tournaments and lost its opening game on the road all seven times. The Geoducks need either one win this weekend or a loss by the current fifth-place teams, College of Idaho and Oregon Tech, to secure fourth place. Should Evergreen finish the regular season in a tie with either C of I or Oregon Tech, or both, the Geoducks would come out on the short end of the tiebreaker formula and go on the road in the first round of the tournament.

TOURNAMENT NOTES: The Cascade Collegiate Conference postseason tournament features eight teams with the top four seeds hosting the fifth through eighth seeds in reverse order - No. 8 at No. 1, etc., on Tuesday, Feb. 24. Semifinal games will be played Friday, Feb. 27, at the site of the two highest remaining seeds, and the title game is slated for Monday, March 2, at the highest remaining seed.

SENIOR DAY: Following the conclusion of Saturday's women's contest and prior to the men's game, senior members of the Evergreen women's and men's teams will be honored on Senior Day. Women's team members being honored are Randi Boseman, Brittany Gray, LaNiecia Weatherspoon, Natasha Trinidad and Sadee Jones.

ABOUT THE GEODUCKS: The Geoducks, with just six players on the roster (cool nicknames are being accepted), enter this weekend's games with an 8-2 home record and as winners of four of the last five games. They average 65.8 points and give up 58.5 points per game and average 5.7 more rebounds per game than their opponents. Their .725 free throw percentage is best among conference teams and their .410 shooting percentage from the field is third best in the CCC. Senior guard LaNiecia Weatherspoon has reached double-figure scoring in nine straight games to raise her scoring average to 14.3, which is best among the conference's active players. (Former Evergreen standout Brittany Gray, whose eligibility ended in early January, still shows as the CCC scoring leader with 15.9 points per game, but she will drop off the list because of minimum games played.) Senior post Sadee Jones is second in scoring at 14.0 points per game and she is the conference leader with an average of 10.2 rebounds. Jones still leads the conference with 13 double-doubles (points-rebounds) and she is tied for 10th nationally in that category. Weatherspoon is also among the CCC leaders with 6.3 boards per game. (Gray is currently third on the list with 9.3 rebounds per game.) Senior point guard Randi Boseman leads the team with 3.8 assists per contest. Senior guard Natasha Trinidad has played her best basketball in recent weeks, averaging 17.7 points over the past three games after averaging 5.6 in the 20 games before that.

RECORD-SETTING SEASON: While there are at least three - and hopefully more - basketball games to be played, it can safely be said that this season will be a record setter. With a 15-8 record and a .652 winning percentage, this year's team will definitely set a program record for season winning percentage. Only two previous Evergreen teams have had winning records - the 2004-05 team set a program record for wins with a 16-14 record (.533 winning percentage), while the 2013-14 squad set the winning percentage mark (.538) during a 14-12 campaign. This year's Geoducks, then, need two wins to set a new single-season victories record for the program. In addition, three Evergreen players have earned CCC Player of the Week recognition a combined four times this year (Sadee Jones twice, LaNiecia Weatherspoon and Brittany Gray once each), which is also a record for the program.

ABOUT COLLEGE OF IDAHO: The Coyotes broke a five-game losing streak with wins over Northwest Christian and Corban last weekend, and as a result have put themselves in the hunt for a first-round home court game in the CCC tournament. The primary reason for that recent success is senior guard Elisha Hensey, who is the conference's leader scorer with 14.8 points per game when factoring in conference contests only. For the season she averages 12.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.4 steals per game. Two other C of I standouts are also guards. Senior Aleah Lowber averages 10.6 points per game and shoots .391 from three-point land, while junior Haylee Burnham checks in with 9.9 points per contest. The 'Yotes average 59.4 points while allowing 70.4 per game and they are negative 9.1 rebounds per contest. In addition, they are one of the poorest shooting teams in the conference, shooting .359 from the field.

THE LAST TIME: College of Idaho scored nine of the game's final 11 points to defeat the Geoducks, 65-59, on Dec. 6 in Caldwell, Idaho. The contest was close throughout with seven ties and 11 lead changes. Brittany Gray, in one of her finals games for the Geoducks, was the game's leading scorer with 25 points, while Sadee Jones tallied 11 points and 14 rebounds. Haylee Burnham led four 'Yotes in double figures with 17 points. Elisha Hensey scored 16, Alicia Jones had 12 and Aleah Lowber 10 in the winning cause. Lowber, a guard, led her team with eight rebounds.

ABOUT EASTERN OREGON: It's interesting to note that Eastern Oregon holds down first place in the conference with a 14-2 record, one game better than Southern Oregon, but it is the latter that is ranked No. 9 in the country while the Mountaineers just this week made a four-spot move up to a tie for No. 17. While those rankings might be a mystery, what isn't a mystery is the reason for Eastern Oregon's 22-5 overall record this season. The team, working on an eight-game winning streak, averages 76.7 points and gives up just 56.1 for a 20.6 scoring margin, which ranks No. 4 among NAIA Division II programs. Their scoring defense, incidentally, ranks No. 9 in the nation. The Mountaineers average 12.0 more rebounds per game than their opponents, shoot .444 from the field and hand out 18.0 assists per game, putting them among the national leaders in those categories. The team's scoring leader is freshman guard Maya Ah You, who averages 11.9 points while shooting .516 overall and .458 from beyond the three-point line. Senior forward Kassy Larson averages 11.8 points and a team-best 8.2 rebounds per game, while junior forward Madeline Laan contributes 11.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per contest. Larson's shooting percentage is .549 and Laan's .525, ranking them third and fourth in the conference. Junior guard Jordan Klebaum averages 9.7 points, 2.2 steals and 2.4 made three-pointers per game, junior forward Nikki Osborne pulls down 6.4 rebounds per game, and junior guard Maloree Moss dishes out 3.6 assists per contest.

THE LAST TIME: Eastern Oregon scored the first 11 points in defeating the Geoducks, 75-50, in the conference opener for both teams. The game was played Dec. 5 in La Grande, Ore. LaNiecia Weatherspoon led Evergreen with 19 points. Leading the way for the hosts was Madeline Laan with 18 points and Airashay Rogers with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

LAST WEEK: The Geoducks picked up a pair of conference road wins last week, beating Warner Pacific, 59-51, on Friday, and taking down Concordia, 62-55, on Saturday. Natasha Trinidad scored a game-high 17 points in the win over Warner Pacific. LaNiecia Weatherspoon added 14 points and Randi Boseman scored 10 for the Geoducks, who also got a game high 11 rebounds from Sadee Jones. Trinidad had 18 points, Uriah Thomas added 16 points and nine rebounds, and LaNiecia Weatherspoon had 13 points and eight rebounds against Concordia.
