Women's Hoops: Geoducks Reach CCC Halfway Mark

COMING UP: The Evergreen State College (2-12 overall, 2-7 CCC) wraps up a four-game Cascade Collegiate Conference home stand this week with games against Northwest University (7-11, 3-6) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and Walla Walla University (0-15, 0-8) at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

HALFWAY MARK: Evergreen reaches the midpoint of the Cascade Collegiate Conference season tonight when it hosts Northwest University, the team it opened the CCC slate against on Dec. 1. Though this game marks the halfway point, the Geoducks have yet to play newcomer Walla Walla. That happens this coming Sunday when the Wolves visit CRC Gym, with tipoff slated for 1 p.m.
 
THE FIRST TIME: Evergreen rallied from a 14-point second quarter deficit but Northwest held on to beat the Geoducks, 67-61, the first time these teams played in Kirkland. Gabi Fenumiai led all players with 19 points and 11 rebounds to pace the Geoducks, followed by Jonelle Staveland with 17 points and Autumn Moorcroft with 16. Lacey Morris dished out nine assists as the Geoducks finished with 18 assists on their 23 field goals. Brianna Fiso scored 17 points, Mariah Stacona and Jordan Asher both scored 13 for Northwest, and Miranda Langenhorst grabbed 10 rebounds for the Eagles.
 
GEODUCKS BY THE NUMBERS: Junior post Gabi Fenumiai ranks third in the CCC with 15.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, followed closely by senior post Uriah Thomas with 12.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Junior point guard Lacey Morris is second in the CCC with 4.3 assists per game. Senior forward Victoria Elleby has come on of late with double-figure scoring in six consective games and now averages 9.4 points per game. Elleby opened the season with 22- and 11-point performances before scoring just 17 total points over a six-game stretch.
 
ABOUT THE EAGLES: Senior guard Jordan Asher leads the Eagles with 12.1 points per game and she tops the conference with 4.4 assists per contest. Freshman guard Mariah Stacona averages 11.2 points and 3.5 assists and is the CCC leader with 3.1 steals per contest. Yet another guard, sophomore Charmaine Bradford, contributes 3.5 assists and 2.2 steals per game. Freshman post Miranda Langenhorst adds 9.3 points and 6.3 rebounds to the mix. The Eagles, atop the conference with 11.7 steals per game, average 70.2 points while allowing 71.4 per game.

ABOUT THE WOLVES: Walla Walla, which plays at Northwest University in Kirkland on Saturday, is winless in 15 games and has been outscored by more than 51 points per contest. Christina Thermidor, a 6-0 junior forward, averages 7.8 points to lead the team, while 5-10 senior guard Lauren Pernu contributes 7.7 points and a team-best 6.6 rebounds per game.

EVERGREEN 59, CORBAN 56: Lacey Morris hit four clutch free throws in the final 23 seconds as Evergreen defeated the visiting Corban Warriors, 59-56, in a conference game played Friday night in CRC Gymnasium. The win ended an eight-game losing streak for the Geoducks, who picked up double-doubles from Victoria Elleby and Uriah Thomas. Elleby tallied 15 points and 11 rebounds and Thomas added 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Geoducks. Morris had nine points and six rebounds for the winners, who the rebounding battle, 46-40.

NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN 69, EVERGREEN 57: A 21-10 scoring advantage in the third quarter propelled the visiting Northwest Christian Beacons to a 69-57 conference victory on Saturday night. Uriah Thomas led the Geoducks with 22 points, including a perfect 8-for-8 at the free throw line, and she grabbed seven rebounds. Victoria Elleby added 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds for Evergreen.
